That's really a shame, temp! But...you are still maintaining a good attitude! Good for you. At least, you have good heads and other parts. And when it's all done you will breathe easier knowing what's under the hood.
Well the Pontiac gods smiled on me. (Hopefully) I traded some parts for a running 326!!! I have taken the cam out and cleaned it up. I have to move some pulleys and such over from the 350, but I might be able to make the show!!! New 326 has a higher compression which might make up for 25 or so CI. I am in the process of putting it together and painting it white and such. More to come!!!!
the carb I had for this car was a 750 and WAY TOOOO big. I traded it for a 450 CFM Holley. It should be here Tuesday or so. Then I will have an update.. Dave
Wait....didn't you mod some heads for that engine? If you are getting more air through the heads you will need more fuel too. Not 750 but probably more than 450.
Well, it is a 326, so the bore is relatively small. Also the heads are unknown. The look to be stock. I did not put my 350 heads on this engine because this long block was already assembled. Did not want to try and find the correct head gaskets and add more cost to the equation. Also Small CFM is better down low. Big CFM up high. The car is not going to be raced or see over 4K most of the time, so 450 is fine. Plus it will help with MPG. My cousin has an old 600 of mine that he is not using, so if I am unhappy with the small carb, I can go a little bigger. That said, I do have a 2 series carrier in the rear and huge 235/75R15 tires so I will have to go to a smaller tire to get the car moving reasonably quick.
The cam that is in the engine is a regrind. The part number as far as I can find is a grind of Pontiacs 066 cam. Specs below. SO not too big or too small. If it turns out to be too big, I have a small cam from the 50$ 350 engine which is very small.. Dave 1965-76 V8 N 273 107 .407" .447" 55 283 116 .407" .447" 9779066
OK, temp....sounds like you know what you are doing, what you want and have it under control. Keep us posted!
Or I talk a good game!!! LOL!! Here is the carb that I traded for. http://forums.performanceyears.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4288423&postcount=1
Well, my 62 Catalina is still having engine issues. I think it is a mismatch between parts. The 326 engine has 350 heads putting the compression ratio in the dirt. Like high 6's!!! And I also think that this mismatch led to a head gasket fail on the passenger side. I did get the correct cylinder heads for this engine and the correct head gasket. I am going to swap those her soon.
I got another 326 in it now. It had has a bad wrist pin! I can't win. But since it is a wrist pin, I am gonna drive it till they have to tow me home!!! Put 70 miles on him yesterday and he drove like a dream. Does 70-75 on the highway easy!!!
Thats true. Even my wife said, for having ZERO budget you manage to do great work. You just have bad luck with used parts!!! That said, now that I might be getting a budget, I might make a SERIOUS HP engine!!!!
