This has absolutely nothing to do with station wagons, but I consider all you folks good friends of mine with whom I should share, hence this posting. If you look at my avatar, you'll see my wagon parked in front of my shore house that I own with my brother. It is on Long Beach Island, New Jersey, which is an 18 mile barrier island 6 miles off the coast. Our Governor has just requested that all residents/tourists leave the island because of the threat of Irene. Apparently, they're saying this could be the worst storm to hit it in 50 years. Now, I'm not one to believe the forecasters; I feel they've called wolf too often for me to accept what they say. But this has me very worried because I also have my 22 foot SeaRay in the water. I spoke to the marina this morning and they said at that point, it should be okay, but I should probably add more lines. Since this morning, the hurricane has changed course a bit and it now looks like it's going to hit us considerably stronger. I'm leaving my office now to go down and secure the house and see what I'll do with the boat. Maybe I should get it out of the water. Not really sure, but possibly I'll be able to figure it out once I get there, (assuming of course they'll let me on the island.) Don't know if I'll have internet down there, but if I do, I'll keep in touch so you won't have to worry. Wish me luck everyone!!
Good luck, snoot! Yeah, go take whatever precautions you can to keep everything safe. They don't say "Better safe, than sorry" for nothing! I sure wish you well. I'll be thinking of you! David
I'm with you, snoot...they do hype these storms that are often just a good wind storm. But...never say never. There have been some really bad ones, too! I just hope you have time to get everything buttoned up properly. As for the boat...it MAY be worse sitting on land if it isn't tied down to the max. I'm thinking tha is what I would do, though. I've been through 3 or 4 hurricanes in Florida and they can be menacing killers. I don't know what to tell you about the boat. If the storm escalates to 4 or up proportions and it does come your way I just hope you weather the storm yourself and remain in a safe place. Good luck, snoot and, if at all possible, please keep in touch so we know you are OK. That goes for anyone else in this storm's path.
Living in FL I know all too well how much they hype the hurricanes. They have had news casters on the beach all day showing us the beach that "could" start to see big waves. (So basically, right now there is no news and you guys are bored...) They just seem to live for the opportunity to be in a rain storm with a trash can or something blowing by.. But, that being said, if this thing is going to be a Cat 4 when it hits, you don't want to be there. Your stuff will either be there or it won't. If it's not, that will suck but it's better than being dead. The storm surge on a Cat 4 storm is so large that it won't really matter what you tie it to, because more than likely that dock/pier/post/whatever won't be there either. If it's not insured and you want to save it, pull it out of the water and head west. Just keep driving. PA would be a good start. You will have very high winds very far inland. Cat 1 or Cat 2, I'd say ride it out. Cat 3 is a tough call. Cat 4 or 5 at landfall is a no-brainer. Get out.
We're on it. God be with you, prayers couldn't hurt... You're on the list. Watched a guy loose a lot of his stuff to the Missouri river this summer, hope you fare well.
i agree with you about the Cat thing at the bottom, even though im a pittsburgher ......but ya snoot come on up to pittsburgh and ride it out !!!
Snoot your welcome to float your boat over here to NS and ride out the storm here. So far it's suppose to miss us, but New Burnswick is suppose to take the brunt... that figures, we have reservation to go to NB for the weekend and take in a stock car race...have to see what happens. Whatever you decide Snoot keep your head covered that is most important...K
im with teej 3 or higher get the hell out...and take your boat and wagon with you! 1 or 2 ...let it ride... take a gun because there will be looting afterward. i remember my dad..during one of the storms that was a 1 or 2 .. he was standing out in the street with water up to his waist laughing.
We're praying all will be well, Snoot. But take precautions anyway. Better to get your stuff away from the storm and find out you didn't need to rather than not do it and lose everything.
