e-Bay Originally a 429-2V, replaced with a Super Cobra Jet with less than a hundred miles on it. Looks like the current owner paid a lot less attention to the interior than the powertrain, though. Still, a Ranch Wagon with a factory 429, a/c, and rear seats. Why is it I can only find 6-passenger Country Squires around here?
A bit of false advertising here IMO. Says at the top that it's got a 429 Super CobraJet, but you read further down to find out it's (probably) the original 429 it came with, just with SCJ heads on it. That doesn't make it a Super Cobra Jet engine.
I think so.. Also, these big Fords were NEVER offered with the SCJ. You could only get them in the Mustangs and Torinos / Fairlane 500's. All you could get in the biggies were 2 and 4V 'regular' 429's.....maybe 345hp tops.
I could be wrong and that happens often but, I don't think SCJ head can go on a regular 429 block. I'm thinking that both the block and the heads on the SCJ were machined with a groove for an O ring around each cylinder to keep the compression in as at the time the compression ratio on the SCJs was around 12:1. Maybe I'm thinking the 428 SCJ.
Sure, and this was certainly delivered with a 429-2V. He has pictures of the engine wrapped in plastic on Photobucket, so I'll accept that it's off the shelf and not the original 429 with new heads. The base 429s delivered 320 hp with a 2V, 360 with a 4V.
I always liked the look of those cars. They have clean lines and were not as ostentatious as the '71's with the longer fenders.
Careful, as with most things, the devil is in the details. If I remember correctly, the term "Super Cobra Jet" referred to an option package available on Mustangs or Torinos, and not the engine itself. It was a 429 "Cobra Jet" motor, with a higher geared rearend and an external oil cooler, these combined were referred to as a "drag pack". My uncle had a '71 429 SCJ Torino for many years in addition to many other incredible musclecar Fords and Shelbys that passed through his hands (and a Porsche or two), until he sold most of them off when he got into motorcyles.
If you believe Wikipedia: "As with the FE line of engines, Ford also offered Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet versions of the 429. The Cobra Jet, rated at 370 hp (280 kW), was equipped with a Rochester Quadrajet 715 cfm 4 BBL carburetor, larger camshaft, 11.3 to 1 compression ratio and a special set of cylinder heads. The Super Cobra Jet, rated at 375 hp (280 kW), had a 4-bolt main block, a Holley 780 cfm 4BBL carburetor, and a larger mechanical camshaft."
I stand corrected then. I remember my uncle did have solid lifters on his Torino that required setting the rocker-arm lash, so the part about the SCJ having a mechanical cam sounds right.
All I know is....those engines had to go pretty darn good! A 780 cfm QJ on a factory car right out of the wrapper? I long for the 69 engines to make a come back! And remember...the horsepower was DOWN played in that year.
