Both of my friends are safe and well. One of them lost his home and his job. It was his first place of his own. He would have been in Joplin if he hadn't been in Neosho a little south of Joplin visiting his mom.
Parents have a slightly newer Kia. It forgot how to shift. It took several trips to the doctor before they were able to erase the computer memory and reprogram it. It was purely a computer issue. It could also cause overheating if you were stuck in the wrong gear.
Well I did a battery cable reset on the computer and ... oddly it still gets hot but not as quickly  and the check enging light came on so I ran a diagnostic. 3 codes came up. The first two where both O2 sensor related and the third could be as simple as getting a new gas cap. Now the Optimas have two serpentine belts. The one that controls the AC and something else [brain not working today] was severely coated with powering steering fluid when the high pressure line sprung a leak and pretty much covered that whole side of the engine. The same day I did the batcab reset I cleaned the belt and replaced a bunch of fuses that even though they weren't blown they looked corroded. I still have to switch into manual in the morning but after the first time I shut off the car or drive till the temp gauge reaches at least 1/4 of the way I can switch it back into automatic... I miss my old 84 Marquis Wagon. I admit I don't know much when all is considered but I learn well and if I knew even then what I know now I could have made it better than when my brother got it...
Is the radiator fan run electrically or by the belt? Not sure what kind of car we are talking about....haven't followed this thread. Reason I ask is that the belt will slip if coated by oil, as you mention, and will not turn the fan and cause over heating. IF it is a mechanically operated fan.
Xavier the Mechanic Proud of you son. You are learning the fine art of modern auto tuning. I still say it's too bad that Lemon wasn't parked at one of those downtown parking lots. You'd be gettin lemon-aid by now!
The fans are electric and running fine. I've been looking through Kia Forums and I hate newer cars even more... anybody want to buy a Kia Optima... oh wait is that legal for me ask that I would love to lemon-aid now.
Could be... Fuel Pressure.. test point, shrader (sp) head gasket.. presure test vacumm leak.. easy test w/pump or gauge stuck or dirty injector(s).. compression/cam wear.. run compression test on cyl agree w/forum member that suggested sensor issue, MAP, O2, etc you have a serious problem if it went through 17 gallons of fuel in a day.. check the oil and the coolant for fuel contamination..
Well from what I have found out from researching the computer codes, I either need to get my engine air filter changed or all new O2 censors. That should fix two of the codes but the last one could be all sorts of things like needing a new gas cap or an electrical short or maybe a molotov cocktail.
I just found that with all the work that we have done on the kia that it is now worth a little over $5000... instead of $3500
Here are all the repairs done so far New windshield, both front spindles (axles) are new, new starter, the fuel lines have been cleaned, new belts, most of the bulbs are new, about a quarter of the fuses are new, all new tires, new spark plugs, complete tune up, oil/ oil filter change, transmission fluid/ transmission fluid filter change, new wiper blades, the high pressure line for the power stearing is new, all recalls have been attended to, front end re-leveled, motor mounts have been fixed, and that is all I can remember so far. It needs a new engine air filter, gas cap, and some coolant, and a thermostat... Maybe I can turn a LEMON into and ORANGE. We are going to put it up for sale some time between now and the end of June. -X P.S. Thank you to all that have helped me figure out what was wrong. With any luck, in a month or two I will posting pictures of a wagon that I can call my own.
