......... My honey wants a new ride:eek:. So in all fairness she deseves it for all of the toys and what not she lets me get/have all these years. I'm gona start looking for used, for her come this fall and I'll use her Saffari mini van as a winter beater......my winter wagon hunt is cancelled as of last nite.

This is what she would like......

......But I'll be doing alot of home work to see what the best SUV out there is, I have no brand loyalty, I want quality and I don't know sqwat about these new/newer SUV's

Get her a nice one with a loaded interior. She deserves it.
Don't forget to look for the Mercury version of the Escape as well. What did they call that thing.......?

Mercury Mariner, I believe, KK. I looked at the earlier models of those, Fat. The 4 bangers were under powered and the 3.0 V6 ran really good and quick. But the gas mileage with the 3.0 sucked. Literally.:D I like these rigs, though.

If I could aford that....I wouldn't buy it!:rofl2: My wife would have a new SUV and with the cash left over all my toys would get a make over.

We spent the morning at used car lots looking around. One lot was open so we were able to get in a 2010 Escape with the 3.0 (didn't drive it though), and a jeep, and a few others for a feel. The Escape has a nice interiour for sure. and although only looking today I kinda like the looks the most.

Now that you Mike, mention that the 3.0 may be a thirsty engine I may consider the smaller. Huge power isn't really imprtant in a way as all she will be doing is driving to work and back. Any trips would still be in the wagons or her old van as the rear cargo erea in general with these SUV's would fit the dogs but not enouph room to travel with both of them. Be like me sitting in Pinto traveling

Well.....EVERY owner review I looked at that had a 4 banger bitched about it being under powered. However, that was awhile back. They may have a different 4 banger in there now. Me? I hate driving a dog. Try them both....see what you think. Check the mileage differential too....might not be that bad now.

Didn't even know they (Ford) had Mercury's name on anything anymore.

It doesn't look to bad...I like the looks better than the Escape. It's a 2005 in the picture, I'm thinking 2008, maybe 07 would be the oldest.

    tedy, speaking from experiance,

jen had a 05 escape XLT sport that we bought brand new.
the fwd verson goes through even heavy snow with ease. you will get 22-25 mpg in that form, 18 with the 4wd. this is the v6 of course!
the 4 cyl is actually great on gas esp. with the standard tranny. but the 4cyl auto is a bit of a dog.

in the 01-07 form the regular xl-xlt had painted body and black bumpers.
whereas the xlt sport had grey painted bumpers and more toys.
the escape limited (the one i'd look for ) had color match painted bumpers and the mach audio stereo. along with heated seats etc.

i can't speak for the 08+ models but the 01-07 are very reliable. when i was a service advisor we hardly ever saw them for anything other than mantainence.
even jens was rock solid. she still pines over it.
its based on the vulcan 3.0 v6 out of the original taurus (albeit all fruited up with modern stuff like dohc's ) but still reliable as hell.

the escape can handle off roading better than all the other fwd based soft-roaders. actually "Öld man Emu" makes a 3"lift for it!

Thanks Ian:), thats the kind of feed back I'm after......I've spent most of the afternoon searching and looking at these and different makes....god dam some makes are fugly:49: to be polite. I have to side with my honey, the Fords look the best when it comes to our price range;).

Local on the net, I found in a lot a 4 banger fwd Escape (used) but I'd feel better with 4wd for Deb. I kinda have made up my mind that I'll be buying from a dealer...I'll pay more but for the reasons I'd be able to test drive the SUV for a weekend, not just do a fast zoom in a private sale. I'm hoping to locate a 4 and a 6 4x4 to compare them power wise/ga$ wise for a day trip up island.

I am going to be like our "sly old Fox" and be very picky about what I buy and how long it takes, this ride isn't for me but for some one more important;)

I'm kinda partial to the later-model Jeep Liberty (2008 and newer). Reminds me of the Cherokee. In fact, in Europe it is the Cherokee...

The Mercury versions are all wheel drive, whereas the Ford versions are 4 wheel drive. If you are seriously considering a new "used" car, then make a vacation out of it and head to the Southern US. The cars in the Southern areas of the US are not rusted like the cars where the snow flies, and the prices are much better on used cars than they are in the North. There are also parts of Oregon that have rust free cars. I bought a 1969 Cadillac that came from Maupin County Oregon, and it is so rust free that you can take the bolt off almost with your fingers (OK.. that is an exaggeration, but you get the gist of what I am talking about).
