Hi, I didn't have a ignition lock cylinder when i bought my car, I started with a screwdriver. It's not a joke and don't laugh please I bought a new but i think it's missing a piece. I guess that there is a sort of cogwheel that engages at the end of the ignition lock cylinder and which can rotate the other toothed wheel. I don't know the english name of this part to try to search on the web. Can you help me ? Thanks This is my ignition lock cylinder : And this is a steering column picture :
If this is for your '73 Montego, there should be a pinion gear that the end of the lock cylinder engages when in the correct position. That gear meshes with a rack gear inside the column head underneath the pinion gear, and that connects to a piece called an actuator. The actuator can break over the years, and it prevents the ignition switch from turning on and off. Does it feel like you get easy movement but the car doesn't turn on and off?
Yes Silvertwinkiehobo is for my 73' Montego. The car usually starts with the screwdriver. The rack gear in the column is good but I think I lack the pinion gear that mounts at the end of the lock cylinder. I try to search this pinion gear on the web, i hope to find it. I put the picture again, i hope you can see. My ignition lock cylinder : And this is a steering column picture :
Hi, Just a few words to tell you that i found my parts on this website : http://www.steeringcolumnservices.com and the name of my part is : lock cylinder gear Thanks for your help
You're welcome. I think you're missing another part, a snap ring that holds the gear in, but it's really not necessary; you can set the ignition to the RUN position, then set the lock cylinder to the same position, dab a little grease on the end, and set the cylinder and gear in, then turn the lock backwards. The pin will help the cylinder stay in without the snap ring.
Thanks Silvertwinkiehobo for the council. Indeed, requires two another parts, one Thrust Washer and one Snap Ring Retainer. I ordered the four parts : the ignition lock cylinder, the ignition lock cylinder gear, the trust washer and the snap ring retainer
