Ok, I have been looking at the kijiji ads every day to see whats out there and comparing prices. As I posted earlier, I have my eye set on the 87 Oldsmobile 88 custom cruiser wagon that is for sale,I offered 1700.

It needs, 2 rear springs,2 front shocks and a gas tank, and it has a valve gasket cover leak thing....all told the parts will be around 400 , closer to 700 if I do the CNDN tire route.

Plus it's got that hideous Mac TAC .......:vomito: so " tack" on a paint job down the road. On the plus side, it drives really nice, straight and true, shifts and stops like it should ,interior is good, excerpt for the headliner, crap, forgot about that,...and then there is the other car,the 92/3 olds roadmaster that needs an engine.

I found an engine ,btw, the deal is 250 now, and once the engine is in and proven sound, another 250. Car is for sale for 800, I plan to offer about half that.

Anyway, in the meantime I have been looking at other cars and ads. And it seems to me that if I could get the car for 1700 that seems on par for what people are asking for cars of that ilk,and in worse shape. I rode 2.5 hours each way AND took a ferry to go look at a car that was, well, omg, the pics didn't show the duct tape over the rust. Every time I opened and closed the door, more of it would fall off.

And the frond end didn't seem connected to the wheel, and the brake light was on...asking 1500. I read here that the olds was overpriced but not from what I am seeing on kijiji and craigslist.

And my second issue is......I really want an older box wagon rather than the RMW,even though the RMW would be a better value, all it appears to need is the engine and a few fix ups with the controls inside.

It looks to me that a lot of the box style wagons here are either overpriced rust buckets or super expensive restorations.

Do I follow my heart and get the olds( provided he agrees to my offer) or follow the better value and get the rmw( if he accepts my offer)

Have you guys gone for the better deal and regretted not getting/ waiting for what you REALLY wanted?

I waited almost 2 years before falling into a car that was both financially and condition-wise hands above all the others I looked at. Patience pays off but when the right one comes along, there can be no hesitation. Since buying mine, I have seen several in comparable condition and only a bit more expensive. Mine was advertised for $1500, I asked him his best price and he said $1200, so I didn't even have to dicker. The others were advertised for $2200-2500 with one finally reduced to $1800. They are out there.

Just my 2 bits, be patient and expect it may take some time to find the rite wagon even if it's not exactly what you were looking for.:)

No offence:tiphat: but that Olds just is not worth $1700 IMO based on not just it's looks but everything else that needs to be done. IMO you should have never made a offer on it. I'd bet it would be for sale for a very long time due to it's condition and it could have been a wagon that in a few months you could have gotten it for a real world price.....but now you have made a offer of $1700, seller won't go lower now but I do feel you benefited because the seller refused the offer.

Keep looking, be patient:), Myself and many other members have looked for months before we chose to buy and just speaking for myself when it came to a daily driver....I did not get what I really wanted but condition of what was available ruled my decition:yup:

I'll second the advice above. Be patient and buy what you want, not just something that comes along. And post up what you are looking for, lots of us wagon-fans out here to keep an eye out for you. "Older Box Wagon" doesn't tell me much.

X2 what Tedy said. Not positive 'bout that '87 you're looking at but most Long Roofs have the fuel cell placed vertically in one side or the other of the quarter panels. And in most cases you have to have the original repaired because the supply of good ones is nill and new for the wagons is nonexistant. If you have to pay more for something that doesn't have duct tape patches on it you'll probably still be farther ahead:tiphat: Jer

Shnizzle, there is an '87 Custom Cruiser on Craiglist Buffalo. From the pictures the car looks nice except for mismatching woodgrain on quarter panels. I don't know where you are located, but the car is only about 40 miles from Niagara Falls. Sorry I don't know how to paste so here is the website. Price is $3500. A little steep I guess but maybe worth a look. Hope this helps.

Sorry Buffalo, no offence....not seeing a $3500 wagon here also:disagree:

The sleazy car lot sales pitch scares me even more!

    Quote.....
    * NO credit checks / NO INTEREST / NO problems
    * $500. + taxes & reg fees &..................................YOUR DRIVING !!!
    * More than a car lot, complete service facility, all vehicles serviced upon sale
    * Every vehicle is test driven / put on a lift / checked by trained techs & thorough NYS insp.

So on top of buying, is there a extra $500 or is that a down payment and then taxes etc?

At the price, it still needs wood and paint....and what else? And what happened to it?

With newer vinyl on both rear quarters that is usually a good sign that it has been rear-ended at some point.

I have spent a considerable amount of time on CL and I am amazed at all the choice and prices in the states. Definatley something I will look into, especially during the summer, I can just ride to go see cars in NY,PA,OH even.

I imported my motorcycle from the states so I know how simple and straightforward it CAN be depending on the seller.

I know with the RMW I could be getting a really good car for about 1000, but for some reason I am not super excited about it. If I am going for a roadie I want the LT1 and if it has the tow package all the better.

And the box style wagon is anything like the olds 88, Pontiac Parisienne, Buick electra, mid to late 80s, square headlights, big steering wheel ect.

This wagon here I am dying to go see but the seller is being very difficult. Initial response email said they weren't interested in tire kickers and if I wasn't serious dont waste their time....ummmm......ok then.

Also said they weren't " actively promoting" the car.....but if you have an ad on kijiji, isn't that actively promoting the car? I have told them I am serious and am very interested in viewing the car at their convenience, blah, blah, and well, it's been frustrating to as the least.

I want to see that car!!!!!!!

Rite from the start that wagon looks like it "could" have potential even if it's getting high on the KM's/millage.

From your description, the seller does sound weird though......It's for sale, should let you view it.

It's priced in the beater class, if it can pass inspection with little work, maybe a fun beater for a year or two? It is showing rust though so who knows how bad or what else is wrong.
    $600

The first ad when I reply says " this ad no longer available". The second one is pretty expensive for what it is. The blue one I called and spoke with dude, says it has a pretty serious oil leak, won't be drivable from Windsor to my house, and the last one is the one I have seen a couple of times and spoken with the owner.

That's the one I am on the fence about,I have located an engine for the car. The car is about 30 mins from my house.

The 88 looks like a great buy. That is about 185,000 miles, so not bad for the age of the car. Enough use to make me think it is well used, but not abused, and with some care, these cars will go well past the 500,000 km mark. It is not unknown for them to pass the 1,000,000 km mark, so lots of life left in this one. I'd just feel better if it were an 87, so no emissions testing! I hate drive clean.

Ok, just called the top ad, the white one. A really nice guy with a heavy accent, I was dying to ask him where his accent was from.....anyway he is a framer, I think he said, and used the car for work, the tailgate opens only one way,the pass window doesn't go down, there is the obvious rust and he said a couple other small things that I can't remember.

He said there is a guy who promised to come pick it up on Monday so he asked I call back then.
