In my 80 ford fairmont squire wagon i have a 3.3 inline 6 , i am going to be putting a 302 in the car , my question is , do i need to swap subframes with another v8 fairmont or can i just move and put diffrent motor mounts in this subframe thats in the car already , thank you in advance
You need the V8/I4 crossmember. I did the reverse, swapping out the V8 for the I6, but I have the crossmember from the swap to install a 2.3 I4 with a Turbo. If you can find what Ford called 'Utility' Fairmonts or Zephyrs - Nurses, Police, Firechief cars or a V8 wagon, take the front Swaybar. Corners like a Ferrari.
Thanks for the info , in the deal i got a 79 fairmont futura with a blown 302 , so im just going swap the whole subframe and trans cross member after i blast it and re paint it all , i just wanted to be sure i needed to , thanks again for the info :banana:
I don't know if you've got a decent farmer community near you, but some of them have their own Powder Coating equipment and they don't usually charge much, if you bring your own paint. Those crossmembers are a super PITA to clean properly, without dunking them in an acid bath - some plating shop. Then blast it and find a John Deere dealer - they usually have a bulletin board of business cards from farm service shops or tractor collectors. Heck if you use John Deere green, they'll throw in a free decal!
Yes you can put a V8 on an I6 crossmember. You have to use 1987-1994 Ford F-150 302 motor mounts, and extend the holes in the I6 mounts. http://fast-fairmonts.weebly.com/engine-swap-info.html
