Somebody hold my hand. I just registered with Mecum as an internet bidder. I may go for the '76. It's lot T184. They're on W194 as I write this, which is Wednesday afternoon about 1:30 Mountain time. Suggests that this car will go some time after 12 noon tomorrow. I noticed that four of these six wagons are very near each other on the auction list. The '76, '81, '86, and '90 wagons are lots T184, T186, T188, and T190, respectively. They're also all being sold at no reserve. I'm guessing that these cars are all being sold by the same seller?

The '91 Custom Cruiser sold for $20,000. Bidding started slowly but then quickly went to $15,000. After some coaxing, he got it up to $19,000, at which point the reserve was lifted, and the car quickly sold for the $20k.

Good luck Jaunty. That would make a lovely garage mate to one of you XS Toro’s. I was very fortunate the last wagon I bought from an auction like this was over Thanksgiving, so I felt lucky that maybe people were out for Black Friday. I guess it just comes down to how much two of you might want this car. It sure is lovely and would look great cruising southern New Mexico!

Thanks. The '76 is a good-looking car, but I have noticed a couple of issues that make me wish I could be onsite. I don't see a way to ask questions about a car online.

Anyway, in this photo, both the steering wheel and dashboard top are covered. The steering wheel I have no problem with as steering wheels this old often have cracks. I can put a nicer-looking cover on it.

But I am concerned about the dashboard. People usually put a cover over it to cover up cracks in the top of the dash pad. If I were on site, I would pull that cover off and have a look. I don't know if cracks can be repaired or if a replacement pad is needed. This is not necessarily a show-stopper, but I would like to know.

The car has A/C, tilt-wheel, and cruise control, but no power locks or windows. The latter, of course, are less to go wrong!

The other issue I noticed is with the rear window weatherstripping, particularly on the right side. This weatherstripping is notorious for not being available for the clamshells. I've highlighted the problem with yellow arrows. At the top, you can see that the weatherstrip has apparently partially ripped and pulled away and is dangling. Towards the bottom, it has worn away completely, leaving only the metal wire reinforcement normally buried inside the rubber.

Note also the arrows at the bottom pointing down. There are a couple of weird little dents in the floor just below where the storage compartment lid ends. Either that or it's weatherstripping that's coming out. Also, the thin strip of floor panel just to the right of the lid is elevated slightly. Compare it to the left side, which looks the way it should. I'm wondering if lifting the trunk lid would reveal a rusted-out trunk. As I say, I would look at all of this were I there in person.

Second that. My story -in Jan 2013 my wife and I went to a car show in Baltimore and Ford had a Gotta have it green Mustang convertible on the floor. Pam jumped in it and had me take her photo. She loved that car but time was not right. Long story short, in April 2021 I found a similar car for sale 2 hrs away and jumped on it. Now sits in our garage next to the Safari.

I would think with the flat top nature of those dashboards cracks, if any would be more confined to the radio speaker corners etc. it’s weird of all of the ‘73-‘78 Mercurys I look at the ‘73 one year only flat top dash always seems in better shape than the later dash that seems to crack at the hip towards the glove box. I would think a ‘71-‘72 dash would be a lot more prone to design stress than the ‘74-‘76 dashes. My first order of business would be white walls. Lol. Just me. But, it really looks pretty solid. Good luck. It would be great during the auction they can lift the pad. The back carpet is di-able I would think

    I agree on the whitewalls!

They've just added a short, walk-around video of the car at the Mecum site. It does give a few more views, including better views of the front seat and a good view of the second seat plus the top of the third seat back, all of which look good. He also zoomed in on the odometer, which shows 24,610. I'll guess that's easily 124,610. But good to know.

I wish he had lifted the dash cover. Maybe they'll post more before the auction occurs.

Thanks. As I sit here, they're on lot T104 with this car being lot T184, so we've probably got another 1.5 to 2 hours before they get to it.

One tidbit is that they just had a good-looking '84 Olds Toronado cross the block at no reserve. They said it was expected to get around $20,000, and it sold for $12,000. Hopefully that means that the Oldsmobile fans will be elsewhere when this wagon comes up!

Very sharp car. The estimate on it is 30-40k. A bit steep for me.

The '57 New Yorker sold for $40,000. The pre-auction estimate was right on.
