I'm among those who were looking for a job. I got laid off in March 2013, when my boss was given the choice to either move to make way for a new subway station, or simply close down and retire. He chose the latter. My mom's health then declined, so I didn't start looking for a new job right away. I loved that job as a Project Manager for a small office furniture company and enjoyed a great working relationship with my boss.
I thought I would be okay financially for a while as I had a judgement against a previous employer (which was another office furniture company) that had gotten way behind in paying my salary (I left that job in 2012 before starting the most recent job). I expected the court ordered payment of the past due salary to get me through a period of unemployment. But that employer chose bankruptcy rather than paying a couple months of salary they owed me.
Meanwhile, finally deciding that an industry change (if not a career change) was in order.
Last week I passed the Virginia state health insurance exam and as of this week, I am an agent selling Aflac supplemental insurance. In this case, it will be 100% commission, so it may take a little while before I start recieving a decent income. This is business to business sales, so I will be selling to businesses, not individuals. My new boss will be passing along some customers to me to get me started, and I will be helping with some of his customers to get a little more income coming in.
The hours are very flexible, the office is in my neighborhood, and I expect do do well.

Yea Jim cuda. Way back when the company I first worked for five years moved from central Illinois to Peekskill, NY I chose not to go and sold life insurance for a well known company. This was a route but to make any money I had to keep selling new policies. After a year I discovered I couldn't sell refridgerators to Eskimos or insurance to poor people. :banghead3:

Wow I didn't know all this Jim. You just don't know when things like this are going to happen. Hubby figured he'd be changing windshields until he retired... you just don't know.
Anyway good for you passing the test and getting another job. I'm a little afraid to ask but how is your mom?

Fannie, I wish your husband the best of luck with his new job.
As for my Mom, she has been in an assisted living facility since a stroke left her paralized in 2003. In March she went into the hospital with a urinary tract infection, which affected her speech, and her ability to do even simple tasks. She has had UTIs before, but she didn't bounce back this time. She can no no longer speak more than an occasional one or two word sentence, she can no longer feed herself, and she can no longer even push her call button for assistance or change channels on the TV with the remote. She is now on a puried food diet as she seems to have trouble chewing. The doctor says she is in a gradual decline, and she is now recieving hospice care. She is comfortable and content. Since March, I have been visiting her daily. Before that, and since her stroke in 2003, I was only visiting 5 or 6 days a week. Each day I usually try to get her to drink an Ensure protein shake and some juice and I try to get her to eat some food she likes (or a tasty desert she likes). In general, she seems comfortable and content, and she dozes off frequently. She is 95, is a Marine veteran from WWII, and has had a good run. She is a very strong willed woman. Her older bother passed away a couple weeks ago and she seemed to take the news well. She last saw him in April.

Jim - sorry to hear of your job loss. It really is crappy when something like this comes up unexpectedly. Happened to me in '08. Life goes on.... And I'll be praying for your mom - for comfort, pain-free, etc. From what you say it seems like her spirits are pretty good considering her situation. Of course, she's got a loving son who visits her every day. Outstanding! :yup:

    And Dewey.....
Check the fender nameplate on that Pontiac.

Thanks Tedy. Shes hanging in there. Most days I can get her to laugh or smile during my visit. Even now, I wouldn't put it past her to recover and last many more years. Her brother who passed away a couple weeks ago was 97. My mom is 95 and is probably determined to make it past 97 just to out last her brother.

Now lets get back to stuff that will make you smile...
