95 roadmaster, only one cooling fan is working, the one on the passenger side. I believe the nonworking one is the secondary one (drivers side). Guy I bought it from just replaced the radiator. I've checked the connections and the fuses. Not sure if you can check the relays or not or I guess it could be a bad motor too. I'm no electrician so any help would be appreciated.
I had a bad motor on mine when I bought it. Replaced motor and the thing never turns on anyways. The "on" temp is set very high.
Try running 12V to the fan motor to see if it turns on. Just run it very briefly since it will draw a lot of current. More than likely as Andy stated if it is a "secondary" fan you aren't getting up high enough in temp to turn it on. My '95 T-Bird has a primary puller fan and a secondary pusher fan. The pusher fan turns on at some ridiculously high temperature and I've never seen it come on (and don't want to).
Yup....chances are you will never see that fan come on. Wouldn't hurt to check it, though, just for peace of mind.
Since I got the temp guage to work (broken wire) when it's at operating temperature it reads mostly the mark past the middle of the guage. I guess I'm thinking that it should run in the middle. Since they didn't put numbers on the guages it might be running where it should. I just thought that if one more fan was running it would bring the guage down to the middle.
A lot of us run a 160 degree thermo in the LT1, 89saf. But, you are right, it would have been nice to have numbers on the gauge. One other thing....the gauges in these cars seem to be all over the place from one car to another. Over at impSS forum there's a guy that created a fix for that. I think it's only about 20 bucks or so to get from him. Another thing I found that is REALLY strange....when I swapped engines, I noticed that the engine I took out had the incorrect sender in it...the one at the rear of the engine for the gauge...it had the smaller, cheaper one that is for cars with the idiot light. I Spent the money for the larger one for my new engine and the smaller one for the idiot light worked BETTER. Go figure.
proper temp for V8 factory is always very high for emission reasons, and the 2nd fan don't come on much at all if ever, though crack up the AC on a 100+ day and it will come on. 160 stats use to be a street fad but not good on the street, a 180 is better suited as you stay in that middle range of more power but less engine wear. 160 is great for racing where engine life isn't a priority. some reason the link isn't working right now but it has good info on that. Though I don't let any engine I own run over 200F picked up power with my V6 Firebird with that, as stock temps are 220+ but once over 200 the engine becomes slugish. http://www.carnut.com/ramblin/_cool3.html
I'll check the thermostat and run some juice to the fan to make sure it still works. Good article 350. Silver, do you know what catagory on the SS site where the guy is with the guage fix? Sure is nice to have this info at your fingertips from guys that have been there done that. Thanks again
Mine had a bad motor too. New motor fixed it. The relays are in the fuse box under the hood on the passenger side near the firewall. You can swap the primary and secondary fan relays and see if it make the other one work and the good one not work. That'll tell you if the relay is bad.
