I was a bit suprised at how the Ford Galixie cab crumpeled on the passenger side.....after all it only hit a Pinto. I like this one, make sure you have the sound on
I have seen a few of the Chinese car crash tests, makes my stomach uneasy. Well the word on the street now, is that China will be getting into bed with Volvo to bring the little buggers over here to North America. Yea, you read that right. It makes as much sense to put your finger in a moving blender "to see if it hurts". Saw that once at college. She now works for the state as a college recruter and drives a "Smart" car.
1 wonder when it was that they started 'crashing' the cars ...corner to corner?....as opposed to straight on? anyone notice that the AMC's ...seemed to hold their 'structual integrity' better?? the Vega and Pinto ended up looking like a 72 Toyota Corolla...
I thought the AMC's did well and frankly was surprised. I don't know why I was but it did make me think again. I'll tell you one thing these bring back to my mind is that I have not yet converted my car to shoulder belts from the lap belts I put in 29 years ago. I think I might make that one of my To-Do's before we get out on the open road this year. Matter of fact I am sure it will be on my list. Okay, pretty sure but not positive sure. Those Chinese tests were downright scary, especially seeing the back end catch up with the front end and watching the passenger compartment disappear. Even their 4x4 was pretty bad. An airbag won't protect you when the firewall moves back that far. The big car vs small car tests are always interresting. The AMC was the only small car that looked like the passenger compartment stayed intact.
bah....safety....shmafety..... SAF....you can permanently attach a 'signature' in your profile..in 'user CP'
Yeah, I saw that - particularly that '71 Ambassador. Stood up much better than the Ford or Chevy, and would have protected the passengers better as well. I was surprised.
Corner to corner....I read years ago that that is the way 9+ out of 10 head on crashes happen...so maybe thats why. Yeah, I noticed the AMC's looked the best after a crash......why do you think the big three wanted then OUT! The Vega, the POS it was/is.....I'm a ford guy at heart but would rather be in a Vega rather than a Pinto after seeing this Sh**...I would'nt want to be in a Pinto if it got rear ended by a push lawn mower. Some one here knows where to find the real poop on this......FORD, knew of the gas tank "blow up" problems long before the Pinto came into production. Problem being )in short) the gas tank behind the rear end of the tiny car. Ford had made prototyps of the same Pinto with the gas tank in front of the rear end and it "did'nt blow up" with rear end colitions or in a mild wind storm but chose to put the gas tank behind the rear end because it saved $apx $12 production cost on every death trap Pinto.....YEAH, aprox $12.....yet how many BILLIONS did they spend on law suits out of court re- "The Pinto"
I guess this would be the point where I state the only four words a married man ever has to use at home: Oh, Yeah, Right, Sorry I forgot about the signature feature.:banghead3: Saf
I'm not sure I would want to be in a Vega, either. Stop-frame on the Vega and you'll see that the whole car folded up - not just the front end.
That video has been pulled, since then. Here's one where a Vega and Pinto go up against their larger siblings. From here, it looks like the Pinto got to grab the muddiest end of the stick, even worse than the Vega had to. The AMCs only did better, because they're Unibodies where the impact is shared with what otherwise would count as a frame
