Hey guys, I figured my first step would be to post this question here and hopefully someone has done this before.... My father and I recently picked up a 1970 Monte Carlo for $100 out of this guys barn. The car has no title or paperwork but the only reason we got the car was for the Motor and Transmission. After we got the car home and gave it a good look over we noticed that the car was in too good of condition to part out. The car is complete with low mileage and a sound body. I have never been a fan of the Monte Carlo but the more I look at the car the more potential I see! So my question is.....How do I get a new title for the car??? I know that different states have different laws and regulations for this matter, but I saw that NC DMV has an application for a new title. Does anyone know what kind of head aches and fees are associated with getting a new title and how long does it normally take?
Broadway Title Company is one of many places to check into. Hemmings always has several title company's advertised. Last time I checked it was about $150 to $250 for a car title and it's 100% legal.
70 Monte Carlos are nice. I love the layout of the interior. Get a signed bill of sale from the seller, a few pictures of the car including a clear picture of the VIN. Take those to the DMV.
Yes, I agree! Title comes from the government so start there. You might need to sign a form stating that you made some sort of search to absolve you of any later claims.
This one is almost identical to one I was looking to buy when I was 16. It had a built 454 and my dad thought it was too fast for me. I bumped into the owner a year later. He owned a tow company and was called out in the middle of the night to tow a wrecked car. When he pulled up he realized it was his old Monte. The kid he sold it to, ran from the police and crashed into a wall. He said the front end was almost to the windshield and the kid didn't survive.
EagleFreek, I'll bet you were glad your dad was smarter than you back then! Our daughter's first car was her boyfriend's parents 1970 Monte Carlo. She drove it like a boy running from the cops!
Thanks for all the comments guys and thanks for posting the pics Tedy!!!! We made sure we got a signed Bill of Sale from the owner. And we inquired about the title and the guy says that he crushed a lot of cars back in the mid 90's and said he turned all the titles of those cars into the DMV. He thinks that the Monte Title must have been mixed in with those titles! The more I look at the car and the more pictures I see of 70 Monte Carlos makes me think that this may be a better "future" project car than a Parts car! We have to keep these classic on the Road! But of coarse I gotta finish the Country Squire first
Save it or sell it widebody. They are great looking and handling cars. You're so right about not many good ones left.
I got a 73 Cuda with a 360 and a 4 speed instead. Not much slower. Back on subject, if the title was accidently turned in as being scrapped, I hope that won't be a problem. Go to your local DMV and see if you can find someone that is willing to talk to you and not just shove you out the door. Broadway Title and other companies like them, don't do anything you can't do yourself. They just know the system.
------Yes, this scrap part could be a problem. But showing that the car has not been damaged or pieced together, with the proof of sale should help. Might even have to go to another state and work back.
Yeah, I'm at the point that if its possible....this car needs to be saved and put back on the road! Parting it out is a last resort.... Wish me luck everyone
Find a totaled '70 Malibu wagon, cut the roof off and make a '70 Monte Carlo wagon, keeping it a 2dr. Now, that would be a project!! Just ask Wix.
