Thanks for the admission.I have been working on getting my 1986 Ford Country Squire lx back on the road.I finally have everything workig correctly EXCEPT the gas sending unit. I have search everywhere for a new unit, Ieven tried another float and it worked for a short time but now it keeps the Low Fuel light on and I filled the tank and only shows a half tank..I cant find a new sending unit,Any places that have them ?
Have you considered having it repaired? I know it would take a few weeks unless you can find a local shop that can do it.
the float had a crack.replaced it but wont go past half tank.it is easy to remove and works fine on the bench.guage was moving so I felt it was ok and filled tank.frustrated when it wont go past half tank and low fuel light comes on

I bet the replacement has a pinhole in it, I believe the aftermarket still makes new ones. Also mopars in 60s-70s used the same float
Here is one at Scott Drake Amazon.com: Scott Drake C0AZ-9202-B 1965-1973 Brass Fuel Sender Float : Automotive
Pour out a few inches of gas in a bowl (hopefully one you don't eat from), and use some wire wrapped around the end of the float, and around a board, or a tool, something to push it fully under the gas, leave it for a few hours. When you remove it and dry it, remove the wire and shake it. If any gas is inside, you'll hear and feel it.
For an 8-dollar part I would just replace it. But while you have the sender out reconnect it and hook a ground wire between the sender and a good body ground with the key on move the arm to full and see if the gauge goes to full then move the arm to empty and see that it goes to empty if it does the gauge, and the sender are working correctly. If not, then we need to diagnose further.
There was no sending unit available for my 68 merc so I looked at a bunch on ebay and found a very similar unit for a torino, bought it, and all I had to do was bend it at the "Z" to make the float arm an inch shorter, and chop the pickup tube an inch shorter, slde the filter back on and it works great...perhaps you could find something similar to yours and do the same?
