I am new to the forum . I have a 1971 chevrolet townsman wagon that is now under a tree but im going to pull it out and fix it up...it was the car that my wife drove to get her driver license. I have been doing some search on google for the vin but all info says that I need 17 numbers and not 13 so here is the vin off of the registration....156351D1709454. I have found a site that says that there were 91,000 made and another that says that around 13,000 2 seat were made. it does have the louvered tailgate I think I read that 71 was the only year for that....any info anybody has will be very usefull. thanks

The 17 digit vin wasn't standardized until 1981. Prior ones were 13 digits. You need to do a specific search for your year. Carfax and other sites aren't equipted to do early ones.

ps....tell the old geezer to go pound sand.

You are correct on the louvered tailgate fact. The louvers were for GM's 'flow-thru ventilation'. I believe in '72 they put the air outlet in the door pillars, because they found that the stamping of the louvers was a bit spendy...... at least I think that was the reason.....

??....Not talking to our new member directly but :Welcome:, tell us about yourself, your wagon, post some pics as we all like pics:bouncy:

There is a reason for intros:)

    http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=917

Yeah we all like our wagons, want to know, learn, etc, etc. Sorry for the high jack, I hope you find the info you are looking for, if I had the answer I'd help.

But lately in the past while the site has been getting more 1 post wonders and members who only "want" and no feed back, no comments on others cars/interests etc and give nothing to the site and it brings up the question, no intrest in the site other than themselves...why are you/they here?

If the above quoted comment was directed at a member who gave his :2cents: because of no into, a member who has participated and given to the site......maybe ...PS...maybe some else should pound........

I am a 42 yr old mail and have liked cars since I was in the 10th grade when I worked to buy my first car, that was a Datsun truck. From there on I have owned 30 to 40 cars, trucks, bikes, and atvs.
I bought a roll back and started moving some cars away from the saw mill on the farm where I live, one of the cars was the car that my wife drove to get her drivers license. It is a '71 Chevrolet Townsman Wagon. That is the car that I was asking about the vin number previously. I will post some pics at a later time.

This was my thought also...not the "pound sand" part, that seemed a bit harsh, but the part about the number of digits in the VIN number. Hope your able to breathe life into the golden oldy.

    :Welcome: aboard.

this car has ben setting for 22 years and it is in very good shape the car is complete it was running when my father-in-law parked it, it was parked to transfer the tags to another car. when we pulled it to shed I could not pull the hood cable so I had to take the bumper and the grill off to trip the lever so we could get the hood up that is as far as ive got so far...more pics. to follow.
