Here's a question for the hard core wagon buffs. I had a 71 Olds full size wagon that I picked up after it was put thru a demo derby. When I got it home, I tore it apart to slavage any parts. It had a 455 4-bbl, T-400, monster 12-bolt rear end and a leaf spring setup. This had a HD tow package. This was the only full size wagon GM wagon I've ever seen with leaf springs. Was this a normal setup? Also, the rear axle was larger than the normal 12-bolt rear housing, and the drums were 12" or 13". I think the axle is still sitting at my dad's house in the field. If you're asking if it was original, it had to be. It was so rusted I had to torch the spring hangers off. And no, I didn't put it thru the derby. This was in the mid-80's when I parted it out.
Hey Drg, yeppers, that's the normal set-up for these wagons. I sure wish I could see the heavy-duty tow package for these clamshells...with the frame ending forward of the retractable tailgate's storage box, and the rear bumper assembly actually mounting to the body instead of the frame, I am at a loss as to how a Class III receiver would mount under one of these. I have an Airstream that I hope to be able to tow with my Buick at some point.
