I guess someone was willing to take the risk. If it does turn out to be "the one", if ever "they" are able to prove without doubt, they can potentially make a couple of hundred thou. If not, well, paint it satin black and go cruising I guess.

Must be nice to have that kind of jingle to play with, either way.

There sure was a lot of controversy on that car. It's an interesting piece of history (assuming it's real), but I'm not sure it's a car I'd want if I was a collector. Just a little creepy for me I guess..

$132K....chump change for some of these guys that frequent these auctions. They can roll the dice and then do one of several things. Try to prove it is authentic (which I do not believe they can), build more fake "evidence" that it is authentic, let it sit for another 20 or 30 years or 100 years in their collection and let their heirs make the claim again.......or dump it. No way is this car authentic.

If you saw the actual auction, Barrett-Jackson gave the documentation a pretty thorough going-over. There was a lot of discussion about what was done prior to verify the car. The VIN matched up all over the car - body/engine/frame, etc. If it's a forgery, it was done in the letters from the government stating the VIN. From what I watched and heard, it seemed legit to me, but who knows really...

Other than an interesting story, it's not a car that especially interests me - that's for sure. I'd rather have the teal woody they auctioned off...(y)

This original story broke on the website of the Professional Car Society as soon as Barrett Jackson auction announced that it was to be sold. You can read the story there and see the original pictures. www.professionalcarsociety.org

There is no question that all the VIN's would match on the car, but the real question is the authenticity of the documents as presented. They touted the Pontiac Historical as proof, but all that they could say was that a Pontiac chassis was manufactured with that serial number on it, and it was sent to Superior Coach. That is all that Pontiac Historical can say about the other Pontiac chassis's that were also sent to Superior at the same time. They can't tell you what Superior Coach did with those chassis's because they don't know.

I thought there were documents from the government confirming the VIN of the vehicle used and that it matched. Either way - it's interesting, but I'm not that passionate about my opinion since I don't know ALL of the facts completely... I'm certainly not going to debate something without the information in front of me...

Like I said, I'd rather have bought the Ford woody - much more fun to me... I loved the chrome surfer-tiki on the hood and such... Very cool...:thumbs2:

The paperwork presented to B-J was never independently verified. The seller was very vague as to where he purchased the ambulance. Only thing he said was he purchased it from a collector in California, that got it from a storage container in Barstow California. Another story circulating is that it came from a salvage yard in Kansas, and he restored it. You can hear this from the TV commentator while the auction was going on.

There were a lot of comments posted on Jalopnik.com (good site, f you haven't seen it...) about some of the 'authentication' documentation. One of which was from some admiral in charge of Navy equipment or some such. Letter was dated 1964 with the ambulance's id#, etc, validating giving it to somebody. Was on official Navy stationary. Thing was, that admiral had retired in 1961........
