Hi! I'm from South Dakota... which seems to be a low Caprice area. I've been obsessed with 198x Caprices since I owned one in High School. My parents sold it when I moved to a metro area, and ever since I've been smart enough to buy my own vehicles I've been searching for another one. Now I am two weeks away from finally owning a 1987 Chevy Caprice Wagon. Found it on craigslist, and can't wait to go get it - WORTH the 600 mile drive! Ahhhh, just thinking about that 5.0L V8 307.... Yep, drooling again. I figured I may as well get a head start on searching for parts (I need a roof rack), and getting back into my beloved wagon community! Hello longend lovers - I'm back!

Congrats on your wagon! Post some pics when you get it. What's the plans besides the roof rack?

Not sure yet. I was so excited to just get my hands on it that I'm not sure what I need to do yet. I know the A/C needs to be recharged (possibly means new compressor or leak), but after that... I should know in a few weeks.

My daughter (who is 8 and a budding wagon addict) had the cutest idea to make a mohawk on the top, so I may be making some custom spikes and screwing them on. We're a slightly alternative family (I'm into ink and piercings), so she thinks it would only be awesomely appropriate to make the car look the same.

    Thoughts? ne_pidonk_1.jpg

I will be picking it up on July 9... counting the days! Eeyore huh? Nice! We are jokingly calling it the Pidonk (a concoction of Pimp Wagon and Donk), but not sure I can put that on a vanity plate and still carpool to a Christian School.

The more we talk about it, the more I love the mohawk idea. Maybe a fabulous "tattoo" paint job. It's brown/maroon... so I think it needs some lime green somewhere. While I really want to restore it, I'm all about the personalization.

Looks like that will be a nice family vehicle. I'm a little put off by the mokawk idea, though. Welcome to the forum....

Oh....and the name 'The Way-Back Machine' is taken.

:Welcome:to the forum. I'm sure you will like it here. I sort of like your ideas but don't think screwing things on the roof is a good idea. Maybe try glueing. I'd rather just stick to a striping type of tattoo theme. Good luck on the road trip and hope the wagon turns out nice.

I'm with CatModelT, here. I would think twice about screwing things to the roof. Water has a nasty way of finding its way inside through holes in the roof, and the last thing one of these wagons needs is water trapped on the underside of the roof skin. They are prone to roof rust anyway, and adding potential to that is asking for trouble. Also, down the line you may change your mind about the Mohawk idea, and filling holes in a roof is a pain in the @$$. Those large, flat panels of sheet metal warp very easily, and any mark is going to show for all eternity.
