I have a 79 Cutlass Cruiser and it has 5 long chrome strips on the top of the roof that goes with the roof rack. Under the chrome strips are pieces of rubber. Mine is cracked. Does anyone know of a source for this stuff? Seems like it would be common to a lot of cars but where do you get it?

Somewhere on our site is a thread with one guy's solution, where he used the vinyl roll floor matting that you can buy by the yard at most flooring shops. They come in black and in different thicknesses. Cut it in strips and Bob's your uncle! :)

PVC is better than ABS for this too, ABS is too rigid and will eventually scratch and crack the roof paint. The trouble with PVC is it won't seal the fastener holes for the metal chrome strips. You'd have to use a paint-friendly sealant. Most bodyshop supply vendors could recommend one.

Another option that I have used on several different car applications is Sikaflex, it comes in black also.

If all you have is "cracking" remove the rubber strip, clean it with alcohol/lacour thinner...some thingthat won't leave a residue. Apply this goop, let cure and your ready to go.

I have/had some ishues with the roof rack on the wagon I just got and used silicone as a FAST fix but silicone won't be a permeant one...the junk just does't last. I have cracking with my rubber strips and will be using this stuff, been there done it before, it's almost bullet proof.
