I'm looking to add an extinguisher to the car but there are quite a few different manufacturers as well as flame retardants.
    What are you guys using?

I keep third from the left, the ABC 5HP-ALV in each of my daily drive wagons.

.......something a lot of people are not aware of, you can't just get a fire extinguisher and just forget about it because the valve says it's OK. The dry chemical ones as just about everybody and there dog has need a, at least once a month maintenance. The dry chemical inside packs itself after time and with that there is the possibility the extinguisher when needed may not completely empty itself and or work period. Once a month ANY dry chemical extinguisher should.... hold extinguisher up side down, give a few good shots with a rubber mallet, and shake for a bit. You should feel the powder inside moving, if you don't feel the powder moving it doesn't matter what the valve says, it's NFG.

Just ask your local fire marshal/fire safety supply store..... not the yahoo behind the counter at the parts store;)

I also keep one in every vehicle.

I just stick to a good brand name, usually get the ABC 2 1/2 or 2 3/4 size, although bigger is better, and I make sure it has a Metal Handle. The ones with a Metal Handle are usually automatically the better quality extinguishers.

Make sure it is UL approved. Also you may want to check out marine type extinguishers, as they have a mounting bracket designed for a moving boat/vehicle. Just make sure you mount any extinguisher so it does not become a "missile" if you have an accident.
