    Rev-

Here are the pictures that we discussed. I am worried about the Fuel Sending unit because the gauge was not working and the elecrtical piece just fell off when I removed the tank. Remember, I have the 4 dr Sedan for parts. Can I use that tank if I need to? I doubt it because the filler tube is in the wrong place. What about it's Fuel Sending unit? Please advise and thanks for helping me!

the sludge is rust and fuel sediment .

there must be a joint that does fuel tanks out there....like i said...just call a (old)RAD repair shop...they'l have someone they can recommend.

    If not...then POR15 does a tank clean/repair kit.. http://www.por15.com/FUEL-TANK-REPAIR-KIT/productinfo/FTRK/

as for the sender...theres a NOS one on Egay...but holy crap:49:$$$

you could probably bend up the 4dr one as close as possible to match...if you really had too..( i have)..but the tank wont work!!!....fillers is in the wrong place:naughty:

I will pull the sedan unit this weekend and see what it looks like. What needs to be modified on it to work?

You will have to experiment. But probably bending the float rod up or down to get close. Pour in a 1/4 tank of fuel and play with it. Sometims playing with it can be fun!:biglaugh:About the float, yes that goes in that small hook bend on the left end of the float wire.

Thanks Cat, that is what I will do. Should there be a wire running from this part to this part?

The only wire should be on the outside from a small stud with nut to the sending unit inside dash. Most are self grounding but it doesn't hurt to add a ground from a sending unit attaching nut to the frame. A Ford member should be able to tell you what color that is if you really need to know.
Since your float was off this is most likely the reason it didn't work.
These floats can be a pain. I've put new ones on our 55's that didn't read correctly.
You might have someone cross reference your sending unit to see if it is interchangeable. Some are only around $25.

Sorry, forgot. That metal strip at the top, probably brass or copper, is the connecting wire from the float to top of sending unit. It looks okay.

Since you're in Texas you might try barbed wire or bailing wire!:rofl2:

    LOL yup that is it!!!!!!

I did some research and found that using electrolysis might be a way to go as far as cleaning out the rust in the tank. Any thoughts on that subject?

I'd say the southern way is to put a handful of gravel in it, add water, and shake. Repeat till rust free. Pour remains in glass, add water and Jack Daniels and drink up.

Ok everyone, more help needed. The 2 pictures show the question I have. Do the 2 pieces connect somehow? I assume that I answered my own question in the 3rd picture. So I guess the question is how do these connect? Do I solder them, use a nut and bolt technique? As far as the float goes, I can get one cheap and will, also, I assume that I can just clean out the filter on the Unit? What "sticky" stuff is used to connect the pig tail gasket? It was black and felt almost like tar?

Without seeing the sender in person, how about a poprivet or a brass screw? For the gasket seal I'd use a Permatex for fuel. Replace the gasket with something close or homemade.

Did you add some gravel or small rocks with water to the tank and shake it. Have a friend with his own ornamental waterwheel with homemade stream going from well to his pond. He hooked his fuel tanks to the waterwheel and let them go round and round with stones and some water to self rattle and clean. I realize it's too much trouble to make your own water wheel but think of something similar.
As Red Green might do, hook the tank to a tracter wheel and go plant some corn. Or as I did, just roll the tank around in the grass.
