I have a 1986 Colony Park and the fuel pump is pretty audible! Is that a sure-fire sign that it's going bad or is it possible that they are just always a bit loud? I appreciate input from all of you veterans. Thanks.

Nope, Brainiac, not to worry. Your fuel pump's fine, just noisy. The only way to eliminate it is by turning your radio up louder. It makes no difference whether the DFRS are up or down, you're still going to hear it.
I sold my sister in law a brand new Squire back in '86 and she was always complaining about the hum. She swore something was wrong with it, that Ford wouldn't allow it to be so loud, and that I just didn't feel like bringing it back into the service dept so they could check it out. Finally, when her friends bought another Country Squire from me a few months later, she believed me as theirs made the same noise.
Perfectly normal for the car, Brainiac, though admittedly annoying.
