I know that the 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis allows for eight feet of room with the tailgate closed and the front seats pushed up a bit. How much room do Clamshells have from tailgate to front seats pushed all the way back? In inches, please.

The clamshell wagons have more storage capacity than a new Tahoe, but not as much as a new Suburban.

Thanks. So, it's four more inches than the Mercury.

And how much space does a Suburban have?

Why? You couldn't translate feet or centimeters or whatever to inches? :)

    I'm guessing about 1/4-1/2 of a meter:D

I never measured one, but I know I could haul a full sheet of plywood in a Clamshell and close the Tail Gate and Glass to boot !!

That was one of their selling points back in the day. They could hold a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood (or whatever) flat and still be able to close the tailgate.

That is amazing. And with todays pickup trucks it can't be done with 95% of them.:slap:

I've hauled 4'x8' sheets of plywood in the Way Back Machine, but I'm glad I don't live too far from the home improvement store. I've got to move the front seat (both sides, separately) ALL the way forward, so much so that my gut is jammed against the steering wheel. The '79-'91 big Fords and Mercs would be much the same I suppose.

If I have to do it again, I could always just leave the gate down.....

If it will fit, just let the plywood lay on top of the closed Tail Gate and let the rest go out the window. Maybe put a cloth down first so nothing scratches. I never liked driving with the Tail Gate down, on a Wagon or a Pick-up. I was always afraid of someone crashing into it causing big damage, rather than just hitting the bumper.

Of course, with a Clamshell, we never had those problems with the Hidden Gate, lol.
