Apparently something happened and the computer caught it, so it turned on the light. Scan the ECU and find out what the code is.

Take the car to Autozone. They'll hook up a code reader for you and get the code or codes, and they won't charge you anything. Whether or not what's wrong is something you can fix yourself is a separate issue, but at least you'll have an idea of what the problem is.

I had a CE light come on my '02 Dodge Dakota a few years ago, and they read the code for me. The problem was a misfire in one of the cylinders (the code indicated which one). I replaced all the spark plugs, and the problem was solved. It turned out they needed replacing even though the engine still seemed to be running fine.

I don't know. Call the nearest Autozone and ask. Would take you 30 seconds.

My guess is they would be able to because they want to sell parts to people who fix their own cars, and what's more likely to need fixing, a newer car or an older car?

With OBD I on a G.M., all you need is a paper clip to check the codes! With the engine off, bend the paper clip into a U, and insert in the upper right two contacts in the connector under the dash. Turn on the ignition, but do not start the car, and start counting flashes of the light. I am sure you can find the codes somewhere. I know they are in the Chilton's and Haynes manuals for the cars.
