Hi I just joined here. I tried posting from home (win 2k SP3, IE6) and it says I haven't met the 10 character minimum and can't post. I'm using IE6 here and it works. At home I'm stuck with dialup where 26400 is something to cheer about (most days is 16800 to 21600), but I let the page load fully. Any ideas?

Wow, that's weird! You can't upgrade to IE7, I guess huh? XP is based on Win2K, and so far I haven't encountered the 10 letter requirement on any forum.

God, I remember those old drives - parking heads. Wow!

Hey! I've got a brand new set of Windows version 1.04 in shrink wrap on 5.25 floppies, and 3 drives for that and a new version of DOS 6.22).

    Dial What ?

Just one year ago I finally switched to satellite internet. Altho the service I bought is far from great, it's like going from a Model T with bad engine to a new Corvette with turbo. We live in the boonies so there is no other choice. Dial-up is not gonna work well with picture downloads or much other than basic emails. Try to get cable or phone line service if you can. Satellite as a last choice. Mine puts me on units like a fuel tank. When I use too many units (gallons) it goes to slower dial-up speed for 24 hours. That stinks. This is why I don't watch too many video clips. Spend the extra money on modern internet. We're worth it!:rofl2:

I was just trying to post an intro of a few paragraphs in the welcome wagon forum. No pics. Tried about 3 times then gave up.

Can't afford satellite internet, besides with all the thick clouds off Lake Michigan most the year, a lot of people say it isn't much good around here anyway.

I'm about a mile too far out for DSL, last year AT&T (the local landline monopoly) forced it on me anyway after I said no and then stuck me with about $80 after it didn't work. I fought with them for a couple months as late charges piled up then I finally gave up, even though they said there was a guaranteed refund if I sent it back within 30 days which I did. 14 years ago on my old 386 SX 33 computer I could get routinely get speeds of 38400 or better with the same ISP when I had a different phone company about 30 miles away.

I tried to get Charter (the local cable monopoly) last year but they came out and then refused to install it even though I have a Charter service box right in my front yard. They kept saying their boss wouldn't approve even though all my neighbors have it. First they said the run was too far (I'm closest to the service box), then they said they couldn't find a water pipe to ground to (that's what the service ground is for), then they said the didn't have permission to run across my dirt driveway (I said it was fine). After that the installer or salesman wouldn't return my calls so as usual I gave up. Funny they'd turn down potential business but you never know around here.

For my TV I still use a 10 ft c-band dish. There's quite a bit for subscription still up there, plus a ton of FTA. Great signal in any weather, and it's still the cheapest deal out there, with no contract either.

Anyway, my computer is a 2.4 GHZ, 500MB of ram IIRC, javascript is on, shouldn't have any problems running this site. I can play DVDs on it. If I have to I'll download IE7 here at work and try it when I get home. Unless there's a better browser to use, a lot of people seem to like Firefox though I've never tried it.

Just make sure its the Win2K compatible version. XP version should work, but the Win2K version would be more stable. Once its on, it might let you upgrade to IE8, because the kernel is the same on XP and Win2K. I'm not sure about that though.

Give Firefox a go. It's slightly more secure and I find it to be less troublesome. We run both at work on around 300 PC's and VM's but IE pretty much gets used only for testing.

I did milk Windows 3.1 for as long as I could, and I still have copies of 3.1, Dos 5.0 and 6.22, and a drawer full of good old programs I downloaded off SimtelNet. Up until a couple years ago, I was on NT4 and still didn't have USB. Didn't really see a need for it, my camera is smartmedia and I have a parallel port reader for it. Scanner and printer are parallel port too, works just fine.

Which version of Firefox do you think would be best? I've got 5 and 6 downloaded here and gotta bring in a jump drive to take them home.

Wow, an NT holdout! That's pretty hardcore. I used NT until I had to move for hardware issues and then I clung to 2000 as long as I could until XP was more stable.

The current version of Firefox is 6. I've been running 5 up until recently and was really happy. I haven't been running 6 long enough to form an intelligent opinion, but I've had no issues with it at all so far.

Sorry, still recovering from backpain on the weekend. I forgot, I'm running 6 on two machines at home and have been since the release date. I've had no issues what so ever with those two machines since moving to 6.
