I was getting all clammy on my hands just watching that.
Don't mind heights, but that's waaaay out of my comfort zone.

Holy Sh!t!! I thought....well that's not TOO bad....when he was inside. But...when he got outside and free climbed I could NOT believe it. NO safety hooks! I thought I had balls! These guys have a job I wouldn't take for any amount. Unbelievable!! I would have thought they would have 5 or 6 different safety hooks on at all times. I just can't believe those guys!

id love to meet their life insurance agent!! he is probably rich as hell!

when i climbed for a company out of texas called AMX (no relation to the car)
we climbed towers that had inside ladders and the monopole toweres that we climbed had a safety cable that ran the length of the tower. when you hooked the slider on the safety cable the most you could fall was 1 ft. and when you are up on the top you had 2 "monkey straps" that you hook to the tower...these had enough give that you could move about, but not fall more than 5 ft. i enjoyed the job a lot. i hate extention ladders but heights don't bother me. i would love the view but i would have to tie off as i go.
the nice part is some of the better harnesses have a cushion built into the bottom so when you stop, you can just hang there and let your legs rest too!

This is SO interesting, Ian. I never realized that some of those guys free climbed at over 1500 feet! I would for sure have to do it the safe (and smart) way as you did. I would definitely have to hook up all the way. I wonder how many of those guys have fallen to their death as a result of free climbing??

KK, I agree with you; my palms were getting all sweaty watching it as well. Sorry guys, but you absolutely could never pay me enough money to climb that high. No way. Oh, and another thing. He's doing this when there's storm clouds coming? WHAT??? At least wait for a blue sky day, fcol.

hmm, norm you bring a valid point...well.... it made me think of one. i dont think i'd mind free climbing at 17685ft if i had a chute on just in case! it would be like base jumping! well...more like base falling!

You're falling at 19 ft/ second squared. Something's gotta hold the neckbone to the tailbone. I'll take a chute, thankyou very much.

I'll bet these guys need walkers when they hit 55 or 60. Just nutso.

It would be quicker to come down with a chute.

Remember the ones they were selling for high rise buildings!
