Are there any true nine-passenger wagons made since 1980? It seemed to think there were come caprice or estate wagons that were 9-seaters, but I can't find any that have any more than 2 seatbelts in the rear.

I think most nine passengers were really eight passenger wagons. Take the rear side facing jump seats of a Country Squire for example. Even though it is possible that 4 people could be squished in; there are only two seat belts provided. Ford marketed it initially as a 10 passenger and then had to revise the literature. This revision was probably due to liability of promoting a passenger capacity that wasn't truly supported. Now if $20 per carload at the local drive-in is available, then that literature would prove handy when bringing ten buddies inside as a legal "carload".

I think this is correct. My '73 Custom Cruiser 3-seat wagon, which is one of the largest wagons ever made by a domestic manufacturer, is an 8-seater in the sense that there are 8 sets of seat belts (3, 3, 2). These large wagons are often described as "9-passenger", mainly by people trying to sell one. I don't think any of these wagons ever came with or could have been ordered with 9 sets of belts.

X2. Vista Cruiser, Custom Cruiser, all had 3-3-2 seating. Now, back in high school I managed to stuff 15 people into my 68 Vista, but that was back in my young and stupid days... :yikes:

The only true "9 passenger wagons" are likely full size vans.

In my young and stupid days, also young and smaller days, we often got four in the front seat and four in the back seat of our cars and others. Of course the only belts were on our jeans.
Oh to be young amd stupid again instead of just stupid!:rofl2:

Most intermediate and full-sized US wagons from the '60s through the '80s were advertised as "9-passenger wagons" and were touted as such. Remember, today's population is about 100 pounds heavier per person than they were then. Cars were rated at "X" passengers @ 150 pounds each. Try 250 - 300 pounds nowadays. So, yeah, they are not true "9-passenger wagons" using today's references. I can remember distinctly having nine and ten people in my Dad's wagon in the early '60s, which was a '61 Chevy Brookwood.

Besides, Ford full-sized wagons have always been "8-passenger wagons", because of the opposing "third" seating arrangement. I'd have to see dealer literature that says "10-passenger" to believe that.

Marty you are posting in the wrong place. Post in the items for sale and maybe someone looking will buy something.

Sorry, but I call B.S. The factory could not legally advertise the car as holding more passengers than were available seat belts. What private sellers later advertise is irrelevant. The number of passengers equals the number of available seat belts, period.

Please prove me wrong by posting a link to a FACTORY brochure that cites more than eight passengers. Here are a couple of sites you can start looking in:

Yeah, I should have mentioned Suburbans as well as full size vans ("when properly equipped", per the brochure):

Except that Suburbans and full-size vans are not station wagons.

In '65, Ford brought out the Dual-Facing Rear Seats (DFRS), and advertised 'seating for a family of 10. They didn't claim the 4 seats in the cargo area were adult-sized. Later on, they started equipping the the DFRS with only 2 belts, instead of 4.
