    Hi All,

I need to rust repair the tailgate on my 70 Chevelle Wagon, and was also going to look for a cleaner replacement. Mine is dual acting, so I know I need a dual acting unit.

Which other GM A-body wagons have a tailgate that is closest fit? I have found a Vista Cruiser that is being parted which looks to be very close except for the backup lights. I don't mind sectioning in backup lights if I can get away from the rust. Does anyone know from experience if this unit would work, or what others will work or be a better starting point?

    Thank you for any input,
    Tom

I don't think a Vista Cruiser gate is the same (aside form the outer skin). I think it's a bit taller from top to bottom. Take some measuements.

As long as it is a 'regular' flat-top from '68 - '72 (Malibu, Pontiac Tempest/LeMans, Olds Cutlass, Buick Skylark) and a 2-way gate, it should fit. Outer skin will be different- the Malibu ws the only one with the back-up lights in the taigate skin.

    Krash,

Thank you for the reply. I am trying to hook up with a friend who has a VC. Hers is an all option car and is really nice. Almost afraid to park mine next to it as it may lower the value of hers! From this I should be able to figure out what will work.

Anyone else do an tailgate swaps on their Chevelles?

    Tom

The A body tailgates are all the same except for the Chevelle's reverse light skin.
The Vista Cruiser gate and glass isn't any taller than a regular wagon. The height difference is taken up by the larger larger roof bow above the gate opening.
The Vista really isn't that much different than any A body wagon except for the longer rear side door area because of the extra chassis length and the roof.

As far as I can tell the dims for all BOP and Chev are the same (never actually measured one) except for the BU lights on the Chevy and the chrome at the top of the BOP's. I tried to get some of that chrome and add it to my Concours, and it was not easy drill-and-screw, but had serious clips and slots in the gate. So that gets me thinking this one on this custom is a BOP gate (unless 68-69 Chevelle wagons had the chrome?)

Sorry if such a link is not allowed.

As this topic has been revivafied, if anyone has done this swap and has input, I'd love to hear it.

    Thanx,
    Tom
