New to this and thinking of buying a 64 Fairlane wagon.

It needs a windshield and the cheapest I can find is $500.

Do you think I would be able to find a used windshield? Where would I have more luck finding a cheaper windshield.

    Thanks.

    Welcome aboard!

Here are some part search ideas:

Post a "Wanted" ad on this forum:
    http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=15

    National Craigslist search engine: http://www.allofcraigs.com/
Using that search tool, I found this current ad (Atlanta) on craigslist: http://atlanta.craigslist.org/sat/pts/2786010311.html
Looks like he might have what you need!

I am no longer a member, but I believe the Fairlane Club of America has an on-line classifieds for members. You have to join the club to receive their publication or access the members-only portions of their website. This is a very active club, with a lot of knowledgeable members and support:
    http://www.fairlaneclubofamerica.com

You could also try posting a parts request here: http://www.seekautoparts.com/?gclid=CNuvs4Xz960CFSIRNAodHFZQvg
You just enter the details of what you are looking for and your contact information. Sellers will contact you if they have what you need.
There are several sites like this one. Just google "search used auto parts", you can find a half dozen or so of these search engines that allow you to post your part request for a notional or local salvage yard search.

    Good luck!

    You're welcome.
Hope you find what you need.

And of course, we want to see pictures of that car!

That seems real high. Most any glass shop should be able to get a brand new windshield and probably for less. But unless you are sure the windshield seal is still in good pliable condition and can be reused, you should try to find a new seal from a Ford parts supplier or someone like Steele Rubber Parts. It wouldn hurt to have replacement windshield trim clips on hand as well in case some don't survive (they usually need to be in place before the windshield goes in.).
Your biggest issue will be finding a glass shop with experience working with windshield rubber seals that our old cars have. Many don't know how to do it any more, and if its not done right it will leak for sure.

Call a couple of yards in the neighborhood, ask them to check 'the line' if they don't have it!!

64 is my favorite year of the Fairlane. I'll have one someday...

Good luck in your search for a windshield!

Another problem with old windshields is the very tiny pitts they can get with age. An old windshield can look great in daytime, but at night be a bear to see out of when oncoming headlights hit the windshield.

Have you tried some of the Fords parts suppliers? Dennis Carpenter, etc.? Or maybe that is where you got the $500 quote?
