Help! I'm looking for the tailgate seals for a 59 Ford wagon, window and gate. I'm told by many vendors that no one is reproducing them. I'm figuring that I can possibly use seals from other wagons that might work. Has anyone done this for a 59 Ford wagon? Thanks.
My '58 Ford Wagon uses the same extruded rubber seals for the tailgate as for the doors and lift gate. So one door seal will wrap around the tailgate ("U" shape) and one door seal goes all the way around the lift gate. Just keep the seam at the top. I get mine through Dennis Carpenter. Tailgate is now pretty well sealed up.
Thanks Jairus. Do you have some pictures of the tailgate with the seals. I'm kinda the show me type. Thanks again.
Well, while the two wagons are only a year apart, I am not saying that the seals are the same shape. Only suggesting that because the designers were probably the same that the technology and seals may share some design similarities. Enough so that parts from one might work for the other if they are not available. So with that caveat I can state categorically that the most important tool in your arsenal for owning a vintage car is also owning a shop manual. (can I get a witness?) Here is the page from the 1958 shop manual, the very first thing I bought off ebay shortly after taking possession of my wagon. A close up slowing a clear cross section of the seal. That shape is the same for the doors as it is for the tailgate by the way. Here is the product from Dennis Carpenter. #B7A-5943706-A Here it is installed in the car. Okay, that said. There are a ton of parts shared between cars manufactured by the same parent company during one year. Dennis Carpenter also carries Edsel stuff for '59. If your seal cross section is different than what you see here, maybe consider the theory that same as '58 door seals were same as tailgate. Why not look at the door seal sources for '59? It's worth a thought, right? Hope this helps.
ON MY 59 FORD RANCHWAGON i have searched high and low for the upper tailgate seal and the window seal . ive brought the old seal to dennis carpenter repoductions 2 or 3 times and tried to match them but no luck also tried steele rubber , restoration specialties, mac's ,dearborn classics the tailgate seal isnt really as important as the upper as more rain and weather gets in thru the upper and soaks the back area
Thanks for all the help. I'll do some homework on my 59 and with your information I'll get the rear end sealed. Thanks.
...wish i had better news for my Ford guy...but....59chevwagon guy... Steelerubber.com Weatherstrip, tailgate. Replaces #4786336. Molded ends have brass core. Fits Station Wagons. 70-1909-85.....$ 109.90/ea.
granted its been a yr or two since ive looked but there were no reproductions made just the generic extrusion but without the proper ends and corners
hey rev thanks so much for that . i put my wagon together about 14 yrs ago and not much was made for my chevy back then. i had bought an exacto hobby mitre box and saw kit to make most of the gaskets that did not have molded ends. i made the 1/4 window seals and the side back glass seals which are both reproduced now
Hey guys still looking for 59 Ford wagon tailgate and rear window seals. No luck yet. There is a local guy that can possibly make the seals from other year seals. The thing is that I have to buy the seals he thinks might work and try them...... big bucks. I'll keep looking.
i spent hours at dennis carpenter's on numerous trips that way and also spoke with steele rubber numerous times and nothing was close from the neighboring yrs
