Always loved most sports cars and this Kaiser-Darrin is among my favorite American sports cars. Not a bad price considering what it is and the condition. I'm sure the price will climb. Now if I had this I'd end up selling it. How many times would I bump that durn pointed door ?
Yeah, it's a big rarity for both the style (it has the 'Darrin Dip') and the sliding car doors, which not only were done for style but for safety at a time when most Americans didn't give two s#!ts about safety. Plus, most of the Greatest Generation really weren't looking for roadsters, they needed sedans and wagons for their growing families.
Yeah, that pointy door does not exactly look crotch friendly! Drop Dead Beautiful car though, dam it would be s sweet ride!! maybe I'm missing something but I can't see 'safety' being part of that truly beautiful design, one thing to have door close on your leg if open and driver zooms off but that would cut your leg off, let alone I could see minor damage effecting the door to open and or close compared to the traditional hinged door. Would I drive it, heck yes!
A car sideswiping that one would not 'knock' the door open; rather, it would jam it closed. What I was referring to was 'suicide' doors, where a sideswiping car would cut a person's leg or legs, arms and/or head off.
Always hated suicide doors, even on the rear doors of older cars. Still the fad for years with hot rods and customs was to change the front doors to suicide remote doors. Another door that has been a pain in my shoulder is on my 2014 Impala. STUPID DOOR!
Still a roundy corner on the Impala would be safer and no real problem rather than the point I run into. They round everything else on these newer cars so a rounded top door edge should increase the MPG more. I'm not asking for sliding doors.
