Hey, can any body out there tell me what a 1970 pontiac Grand Prix (SJ) 455 motor might be worth? THANX!!
Been a few years since I have bought/sold Pontiac stuff but the 455s are getting a little hard to find...I may be way off... I don't know what heads the GPs had but the GTOs with 455s seemed to have a poor head installed that were prone to cracking...I cant remember the head number.... Is it a running engine? Has it ever been rebuilt? (stock bore)...seems like the 455s wont take much of an overbore but like I said...it has been 10 years since I built one. Any accs on the engine? Seems to me a complete 455 needing rebuild should be worth $200-300.... A complete running engine maybe $700-800... An engine with work that is running maybe $1000 or up depending on work.... But again....I may be way off...My LeMans has a strong running 400 that I bought for $600 10 years ago...It had about 2K miles at the time.. Be sure its a 455 and not a 428 from a 69....I bought an old GP/SJ with a blown 428 and got $1500 just for the crank....I don't know if the 455 prices have taken off like that or not....
got 250 for a BARE BLOCK 10 yrs ago. 455 poncho's are hard to find. Depending on the heads as noted I would bet $1000+ if it runs. 1970 was GM's highest horsepower year for most of their lines. The better she runs the more you'll get. I know mine I had on craigslist freshen'd up/rebuilt was listed for 2500 and I had a good amount of calls for it but ended up using it myself instead. And I wouldn't take 1 dime less for it now. It's a 71 and also drilled for 4 bolt mains altho it doesn't have them.
Thanx for the info. I bought the car (barn find) and it's pretty trashed. Everything's there, 400 tranny, 12 bolt rear, just missing the wheels.
IDK about price, but I know they are awesome engines. I have never had a moments trouble out of my '73 Pontiac Grand Ville with the factory 455 engine. I did have a guy offer me $1200 once just for my engine, but I turned it down of course. He wasn't going to junk out my Grand Ville! lol. I paid $900 for the car in 2003.
