    A photo from the other direction reveals the answer. A lot of those "hash marks" on the various pods are just decorative.

    The far left pod has a temperature gauge at the bottom. Next is the speedometer followed by the fuel gauge (with some idiot lights around the bottom perimeter), and then a fuel economy gauge. No tachometer is seen.

    All any of those "fuel economy" gauges were is just vacuum gauges.

    I think they would actually help quite a bit. Anything that keeps the vacuum as high as possible keeps the fuel mileage as high as possible. When you step on the gas, the vacuum drops significantly, and you want to avoid that. I installed an aftermarket gauge like this on a '75 Chevy Nova I once owned, and I had a lot of fun with it. It was always a bit of a game to get the car moving and up to speed with as little loss of vacuum as possible.
