Looked like a great bargain until I saw all the rust. No way this was a TN car from new. https://knoxville.craigslist.org/cto/5656093645.html
Yeah, it's a salt belt car. The '97 Grand Marq we bought for my brother is from Indiana, and has rust, but is still fairly solid. Just some basic fender rust-throughs that need to be addressed. That's an excellent front header design. Would it fit a '79 GP?
I love this guy's ad: Do scammers only write in sentence fragments? Any self-respecting scammer would see this and just send him complete sentences. I wonder what he has against Dodge?
If you like these things, try to find another 4 door.....the production figures are pretty low. There can't be many survivors. I say 1500.00 is a good price and drive it until the wheels fall off, literally. If you guys think that is bad rust - I'd hate to see what you'd call some of MY rust belt beauties I had in the past. If that's a rust belt '79 Pontiac, in my experience, it's held up better than its brethren. But then again, pictures have a way of making things look better than they really are. I'd go 15 on this one - I think these are pretty cool, and to get over the one back in '99 for a good price I missed out on - I dilly-dallied until it was too late. I wouldn't be surprised if they even cracked 1500 units on the 4 doors in '79. Again, driving it until the wheels fell off....... 13-1500.00 doesn't buy much these days. I think the part of the sentence fragments is that the scammers come from non-English speaking/writing countries, so their spelling/composition is atrocious. But to them, it looks normal.
I think his asking price is very fair for what the car is. Just don't show up to look at it driving a Dodge.
True, the Grand Am was mostly a styling variation on the exterior, it did come with standard V8, AT and power steering and brakes as well as the Rally RTS handling package, as compared to the Le Mans. But the interior could be just as plain as the Le Mans, as the one for sale proves. I believe the Grand Am became even higher in standard equipment for its final year in 1980 when it was the coupe only. I think buckets and console and the rally gauges were all standard by then.
"Rear frame rails are rusted. Just noticed the frame rails are rusted up to the spring mounts." The car is worth scrap value, that rust is beyond repair and it's not safe to drive figuring all the fuel and brake lines are rotting away too. I don't think it could outrun a trail of leaking fuel line flames until it ran out of gas, be fun to watch it try though.
Rear frame rail rust is very common on 78-86 GM A & G Body Cars. It's usually what does them in. It is a pretty base model car. The 4-ddor 78's were much prettier. They look much better with Bucket seats and a floor shifter. I have never cared for the non-roll down rear door windows on the 78-86 midsize GM 4-doors and wagons. I think it was a stupid cost saving measure that was not repeated. No mention if it has a 301 2bbl or 4bbl. I don't think the price is that out of line. If I wanted a driver it would not bother me. As for fuel line and brake line rust I envy people who live in areas were a 29 year old car is expected to have solid original hard lines. Must be nice. My 10 year old 70,000 mile Dodge truck had fuel and brake line issues.
Yes, I agree. I had a '79 Monte Carlo that I had to get a frame rail done on. But it was worth it, as the car was a looker with T-tops and at the time I didn't have the cheddar for a new car. I'd probably do that with this one too if I had it, but the floor rot would be a pain in the ass for me. As a side note, my '65 Merc had it's original exhaust on it until 2009 when I did the engine rebuild I sprung for new duals. Had it's original brake lines until 2012.
Same seller in Knoxville appears to have a Grand Am fetish. https://knoxville.craigslist.org/cto/5630327023.html
If someone wants to snag them, offer $2K for both and all stuff that goes with it, lock, stock and barrel
