I really love these cars, not in any way practical for daily duty anymore but it's the last gasp of a dying American luxury yacht market, a car that you just don't see anymore and definitely cannot buy new. *Almost* too excessive but not quite there. Great riding and cruising cars.

In these colors too, it’s such understated opulence. Agreed 1979 was the last year of America’s luxo barges. Lincoln was the last hold out. The Marks still kept some pretty good sales numbers right through the very end. As we’ve discussed here the ‘77-‘79 Mark series beat the pants off of the GM offerings through those big luxo years. Guess the “Malaise” was too much for everyone those years including the American luxury car market.

All the automakers were forced to downsize due to the federal CAFE standards. Ford was the last holdout on the biggest yachts like this Continental. They were not dropped due to lack of buyer interest, though.

No. Their numbers were strong till the end. Agree there was interest in these cars. C A F E has pushed a lot of bigger cars to the curb. Ford/Mercury tried to side step some of this process moving panther bodies from St.Louis to St.Thomas, Ontario, but uncle has a way to find you out lol

Little over $3.00 per pound. Cheaper than hamburger. It is a pretty car.
