getting ready to work on the car.........the top needs some attention so it will stop rusting......a body man told me to sand it with 80 grit and apply por15 , let it get tacky then prime, is this the right way to stop the rust? sorry ive got pics , I tried to post but it said I already posted them they are in geraral discussion under NEED VIN HELP.....I am new to using the forum...oooooooops
You really need a different body man! The advice he gave you will never give a nice finish. That wagon looks like a lot of work, but will be well worth the effort when you are done! I made a suggestion about the roof in the other thread. Good luck, and keep posting pictures of the progress. We're all waiting!
not much progress I tried to get the window up today .......no go!!!!took the motor off could not get it to work so I went to work on the engine(now you all remember that when I post this is the car in my avatar that has been setting for 22 years)this is were I made some progress if I get a new gas tank were it will hold gas the car will crank and run....yes that is right I said it will run...I had it running just a few seconds off of either and then by pouring gas in the carb....all we did was put a new coil, condenser, and adjusted the points and she fired up. I have not got to the top yet because I cant get the window to work so I can get the last piece of trim off the top to put the rust treatment on it.
When you have pics already on the forums all you have to do is find them then copy and paste them wherever you want them to be...easy So after you find the picture you want to copy, place the mouse cursor on the picture and right chick your mouse, a list will pop up, scroll down until you find the word "copy", click on it then go to wherever you want to paste your picture. Click on it so you have the flashing icon, place the cursor near it and right click again, another list will pop up, scroll down until you find the word "paste", click on it and your picture should appear...easy. You'll be copying and pasting all over the place.
fannie, thanks for the pm.......I took the worm gear box off and it had been dented by something on the side and was causing the gear not to rotate.....took it apart and fixed that problem.....now I can use a drill and after 22 years of setting the window moves....got it up and took the trim off, I then sanded the top with 80 grit and applied a product called RUST-MORT.....the directions say to apply 3-4 thin coats then wipe with damp cloth after 24 hours and apply primmer.....the problem im having with this is that it is not tacking up so I can apply another coat.......has any body ever used this product and how did it work for you? I also took the gas tank off and it was rusted bad near the bottom.....I have to have a new tank....any advise on were to get one?
the top has rust-mort rust treatment on it to stop the rust and two coats of high build waterproof ppg primer
ive got a buddy in grantham which is 80 miles east of raleigh. he does derbies. he has 71-76 chevys. give him a call at 919 658 9955 his name is chris (arab nick name). Hes a good guy. if you need parts give him a call
he also has a 76 buick wagon with third row seating ive also got some gm parts from 71-76 like a riviera steering column for floor shift 2 sets park avenue bucket seats fan motors a/c parts
I found out with my wagon that the only way to properly deal with rust that is pitted, like what you have there, is to have it sandblasted. Then you'll need a very, very thin coat of filler to fill in the pitted holes.
