If it's sort of a rubber piece that goes between the steering shaft and the steering rack then we call it a "rag" joint. Not sure of the Volvo configuration whether its something like a rag joint or a swivel or something.

    Tie rod.
It connects the rack to the spindle, and allows adjustment of the toe. :floor_jack:
The car will require a front end alignment afterwards.
Have fun whacking on the spindle! :smash:

Look at you, Mrs LowLow. Congratulations on a job well done. That's great. Have you driven the Volvo yet and if so, I'll bet it's a whole lot better than before.
    Good Job!!

actually, Jims has some manuell tools for the alignment (spelling??) he doesnt really now how to use them so I was thinking if Im gonna learn how to do it....
Start easy with the volvo, then we have one blazer k5, one mini-blazer, the buick electra and the nash who needs to do the same work on them....

Has anyone tried to do strighten up the frontwheel-thingy by your self?? Is it really that difficult?

OK now I know what you were talking about....tie rods.

Yes, just try and learn with the alignment tools. What is the worst that could happen?(y)

I have another friend that is also a mechanic...(have 3 good mechanic friends in the business)....and he can do a quickie job with a few tools and a tape measure. BUT...I prefer to get the car on an alignment rack and have the job done right by someone that's been in that business for awhile. Make sure you don't need any other front end parts before you have it aligned. One of my pet peeves with SOME alignment guys is that they will align the car without regard to the steering wheel position. I like my steering wheel STRAIGHT when I am driving straight. Have your guy straighten the steering wheel when aligning it.

Here they call that a thrust alignment and charge extra for it.:taz: It's not a bad idea if the rear end is an independent suspension to go ahead and get a 4 wheel alignment. It's well worth the money.

Not necessarly true. You can have your car aligned much more accurately on an alignment rack without resorting to the 4 wheel alignment. Although, the 4 wheel alignment is popular with some cars now days.

I've done a few complete front ends on my cars/truck and as mentioned measure, count thread turns etc, etc. I have always had a shop do the final alignment. I've been real close every time except for once...don't know what happened. It's good piece of mind, especialy if you have real good tires. And like the Fox mentions, make sure the stearing wheel is straight. I've never had to ask that, it's always been done but im the years it's always the same shop I've gone to.
