my dad actually still has and drives a van like that, it's a 70 something Ford van that is all black and trimmed in red and silver with the bubble window on the sides and shag carpet from floor to ceiling. has side pipes, head light covers the louvered back window covers. we call call his van the "tank". he does have another vehicle he drives for work but he drives the van for pleasure and yes he actually uses the 8-Track player in it!!

yeah the 8-Track didn't work but it took me a week to repair it and get it working right for him. now i'm restoring a old record player that mounts under the dash from the 50's. i'll probably sell the record player on ebay after i get it done cause they go for a good amount when thier restored and working like i plan on doin with it.

whenever i see those old vans all i can think of is the van from Friday the 13th, and the one from Edward Scissor Hands, then of coarse the new Stride Gum commercials.

I loved the custom van era. Saw many done with taste and some that were...WTF were you thinking?!?

    Pic below............

Imagine not a 4x4, in this colour, but all shinny, no bubble window (sadly) some very tastefull not over done pin stipe, sloted fat mags (14's front, 15's back) with a real nice stance, no side door windows but windows (louvered) on rear and me...before I got 'FAT":pub:. Mine had a real nice dual tube custom front bumper with fog lamps.

    Good memories...[IMG]

I love 8-tracks. I never had a car with a player though, came close with a 77 Squire that was bought out from under me. I do however have about 7 8-track players in my house, and mountains of tapes and listen to them every day on my big wood console stereo :)

Sold a olds demo 8-track for $5 at a car show.

I got a box full from an old van at the JY. Even a Jimmy Hendrix tape, beach boys, about 60 tapes. Now I need a player.

    Hey Krash,

I had a buddy that had a '65 Chevy van that had no hood - never had one. The engine was in a box between the driver and passenger seat. You could pop the latches and hinge it open while you were driving down the road. It had a 230 cid inline six in it.

It also only had a single piece of sheet metal in the front so the headlight bowls protruded into the passenger compartment. I could reach down while we were running down the road after dark and unplug the right headlight and then flash it on and off. He didn't think too highly of it. He had almost 300,000 miles on that old Chevy van when he traded it in for a slightly used '78 short wb Chevy G10 van. He now has over 350,000 miles on it but it looks like the body is going to let go before the driveline does.

Yup. You're talking about one of these.......

This is the first generation 'Chevy Van'. Came after the Corvair Van. Very similar in construction to the first Ford Econoline - straight 6 between the front seats, covered by a box. Your legs were part of the safey equipment - the crush zone.

The manufacturers got smart for the second generations, moving the front axle and engines forward. A bit easier to check things on the engine, too.

Yep, that's the series. His was the longer body style. It was a good old van but I was always worried about the "crumple zone".
