Venting time....... First some background... Wife, #1 daughter and I are in Oregon now. #2 daughter remained in Orange County. Get a call this morning from #2 daughter. She says that her car started making some real bad noises last night when she was on her way to her job (had a night shift). It died on her at a stop light, and she was able then to start it up, but it was making all kinds of noise, and it didn't run real good. After a bit, it quit again and wouldn't start. She parked the car there about halfway to work and got a ride the rest of the way. She called me in the morning after her shift. I told her to see if it was leaking any fluids. She was going to have a friend come look at it. Then she offers this..."Dad, I swear I was gonna get my oil changed today, I swear......"( What this means, in #2 daughter-speak, is that her low oil pressure warninig light has been glaring at her for a week now, and she's just been too 'busy' to do anything about it...) She described the noise it was making to me, and I told her it sounded bad - maybe a connecting rod....... She calls me back later and says her friend looked at it. Lots of oil leaking under the car. Friend says it threw a rod through the block.......... Kids............this one's gonna be an expensive lesson for her........
Remember that cereal - Trix? The slogan was "Trix are for kids"? Idiot lights don't play them. Tell her about RTFM. It could save her rent money for a few months.
Krash, somehow or other, I have the feeling it's not going to be as expensive for your daughter as it is going to be for you!! "Oh please, Daddy, I swear I'll pay you back!!"
Don't do it Krash! When I was 18(ish) I ruined my first rig. It was a beautiful 1981 F-100 Ranger XLT (this was still when the "Ranger was a Full-size truck) short box step side. Had nice chrome wheels, tinted winders, bed cover the works. I traded in my little Ranger and a ton of hard earned lawn mowing money for it. I was going up to Ellensburg to visit Central Washington University. There are a lot of steep hills between here and there. I was young and silly, and although my Dad had instilled in me the virtues of regular vehicle maintenance I had gotten lazy. So I was flying up a hill, listening to the AC/DC when I realized "Huh, that doesn't sound like part of the song." Whoops. And to make matters worse, I ended up nursing it the rest of the way to Ellensburg (up and down more hills) Probly could have saved it if I had just stopped, let it cool down and thought it over. Instead I cooked it. That's one of them "Life Lessons"
Yup, cheaper lesson, but my college age son drove his car last summer for 3 weeks on a flat tire, despite me telling him to check it because it was low. He chewed through the sidewalls and ruined the tire. When I told him he would have to order 2 new tires (had to replace the pair), he just looked at me. "How much does that cost?". I told him to get out his debit card and call Tirerack and find out. It was only a $160 lesson, but hopefully it will stick with him...
Her friend is going to put a used motor in it. I'll front some of the money, but she's paying it all back on this one........ It's either do this, or junk the car and take a chance on some $900 beater........
Start saving Ian At least your daughter is OK Krash, but from one dad to another make sure she pays you back. I closed the bank of dad when my girl turned 20.
Naw...I told her all it needs is a tube of JB Weld...... I was a bit apprehensive about her 'friend' installing the used motor, until I found out he's a UTI grad, been doing it for a while.
