Here, there is no in car driver's ed. But if you want your permit at 16, you need 6 hours from a driving school. So my friend's mom is an instructor, so I drove a pos 03 corolla...

When my dad took drivers ed in 74(?) he drove Chryslers of some kind of the era.

We never had drivers ed iether, The morning I turned 16 Dad and I went and got my learners permit. At the time you had to have a learners for at least 2 weeks before you could get your road test. Road test day came and Dad threw a curve ball at me, he would'nt let me take my test in my 67 Cougar but in our 77 Ford camper van. When the instutor came out Dad had alwready closed the curtin behind the seats and said I was to drive with mirors only.....I passed:dance:

    Drivers ED???

Our school had 6 cars...All Dodge...5 Automatics and 1- 3 on-the-tree (cream cloored) Dart with 6 cyl., with rubber 'carpets'. A friend named John and I were the only ones who could drive a clutch...So we had 40 blissfull minutes, with the radio on low to putter around. We were able to get a learners at 14, and the operaters at 16.
The year...1966 and in Jax., Fl. I seem to remember the other cars were like Polaras or something like that. The next year they went to Buicks...and nice ones at that!!! What a RIP !!!
When I went for the driving test...I had always ONLY driven a manual and I had to take the test in a 1965 Buick Electra... What a boat !!! (The tester had to tell me what to do to get it to move). Especially when you were used to Opel Kadetts!!! Never looked back!!!
Now I feel bad because none of my boys know how to drive a clutch. I think I will try and rent one this summer and have some fun with them!!!
    Later,
    Bruce

How 'bout ah '53 Phord 6 in ah row, 3 on ah tree with 2 sets of brake 'n clutch pedals. Not that we coulda done hole shots anyway but I don't think they trusted any of us! That was 3 years before Eisenhower inacted the national freeway act for our younger members and Los Angeles already had 5 of 'um and we drove 'um all:evilsmile:

I thought I was old.:rofl2: Did cars have turn signals back then?:D

I remember in Ma. that up until 1964 you had to perform the drivers test in a car equipped with a manual transmission. My sister got her license in 1962. My brother got his in 1964 using an automatic. I got mine in 1968 and the tough part was parallel parking and backing up 100 feet in a straight line. Right turns on a red light were not permitted. Now I think if you get the car started you pass.

we had a dozen or so 72-73 Dodge POS and some Plymouth POS they were all awful I wanna say Coronet, oh Beleveder maybe Fury IIVXL?? They sucked. No A/C no radio 4 or 5 of us jammed in crawling around a hot (Miami) parking lot

Took the test in Mom's 73 Impala wagon, passed w/ flying colors, even parallel parking and no white walls were damaged

Got hit that night from behind at a red light, FHP was at the light next to me & was able to tell my parents NOT HIS FAULT - 1st and last time for that there

    Turn signals but no a/c

Yeah, I'm still amazed that I'm still pumpin' air too:clap:My first recollections of turn signals were on ah '48 Buick "FO-HOLAH ROAD MASTAH" that The General incorperated 'um into the trunk emblem. Arm signals were defineatly part of the test tho'. Still bugs me when I have someone in front of me with their arm dangling out the window 'cuz I know it ain't a signal for slowing down! SR-99 from Anaheim to San Jaun Capistrano waz what we romantically reffered to as a 3 LANE DEATH TRAP because the middle lane was not for left turns, it waz fer passin' if you had the Kahonies tah use it! Last time I waz on the shaky side ah couple years ago my brother told me that same streatch of what iz now I-405 has 12 lanes runnin' each direction. I did not go check it out! As for A/C. Betcha never heard of puttin' ah 25lb block of dry ice on the floor and letting the hot air cool as it came rushin' thru' the floor vents either did yeah?:thumbs2:

    My fondest memories...???

Was to pull into the Drive-in window and ask for a mixed drink at the local watering hole, for my DaD!!!
We could (adults) could drink and drive in J'ville(Fl), untill some time in the 70's (don't really remember).
I still wasn't legal until 72. I was in Uncle Sams employment until '74, and they served 3-2 at the base. You other OF's know what I'm talking about!!!

When I was in our Army, we had the base commander's happy hour on Friday at the 'canteen'. Free draft - all you could carry to your table or billiard table.

Yea we got tested on hand signals in Ma. It's amazing that we don't see more recalls on the new cars. It seems the systems are all broke now or the auto companies don't install them. Ya just don't see anyone using them anymore except until after the turn is initiated. Probably my biggest pet peeve. My other peeve is those who leave their "driving lights" on all the time. Those buggers have to be about 1 million candle power.

During my driving test I was expected to use both the new fangled turn signals and hand signals. Failure to do that was automatic failure of the driving test.
