Information about Mercury/400 engine?

    Hi everyone, im from sweden and got some questions about the Ford/Mercury 400 engine. Anyone who can give me some general information about that engine, common problems with it, good/bad things and so on.. ? easy to increase performance?

    The car i own is a Mercury Marquis 1973 Station wagon and i would really appreciate som information about that to.. Can't find much information about these cars in sweden thou they're not very common :(

    Im sorry for my bad english and i hope this is the right category to ask my question.

    Ford 400M Engine

    these are pretty good engines, they are a further development of the famous Cleveland engines.

    Thanks for you're answers. Very interesting reading to look forward to :)
    I have owned this car for 4 years now and it has never been any problems with it and the engine starts easily even in cold winter weather, so it seems to be a good engine..

    Hi Tommy. I have had a hand full of the 400s and so far they have been loyal engines. My '78 has got 247k original miles on it and has yet to be rebuilt. However, it dose drop oil pressure once it gets hot. I put in a higher volume oil pump to give it some more life but it will need a proper rebuild soon.

    As for stuff to perk it up. The 2bbl carb is too small for it. I suggest a mild cam, Edelbrock carb and intake to let the 400 perform better. Another idea that some of the Ford truck guys use, I guess Aussie 351 heads really work well with the American 400. But I have yet to go down that path myself.
