don hi I'm Chopper the module that you are replacing on the distributor has a special tool to remove it the tool is inexpensively at your local auto parts store make sure that when you remove the old mod. that you have a clean smooth surface to mount to cover the back side of the new mod. with dielectric grease (helps prevent electrolysis) if this part was the problem and do other conditions have changed the car will crank up just like it did before it died.HOPE IT HELPS ....later Chopper
Thanks Chopper for the advice. Thanks also to Stormin' Norman for the links about the Ford TFI problems. I plan on doing it this weekend, depending on if the rainy downpour we have had for the last couple of weeks will let up. I bought the special tool a couple of days ago, hoping to have enough room to squeeze in there and remove the module without having to remove the distributor.
My 89 Crownvic did the same thing to me. The first time it stalled out in traffic when I was out of state, on a Sunday no less. I had it towed to a dealer. The next morning when I called the dealer, they said it started just fine in the lot D'oh! They changed the coil wire even though they couldn't duplicate the problem. A month later it wouldn't start in my driveway. Same symptom. Towed it to my local dealer. Again, it started up for them when taken off the tow truck. ARG! I told them to replace the module. But I was never 100% confident in the car after that. I traded it in very shortly after.
I AM VICTORIOUS!!!! Thanks alot for all the good advice my Wagon lovin' friends. I replaced the ignition module and the Squire not only started right up, I can't remember when it has ever run as good as it has now. It just seems to have a lot more pep, run stronger, and I even noticed a substatial gain in gas milage! I wonder how long this module has been slowly robbing my Squire of power & performance before it finally quit? I also replaced the sway bar bushings & end link kits today. The rubber had seperated and part of the bushing on one side had fallen out. Now it handles alot better too. Now I can Wagon to work, on the Oregon Trail again. :dancingparty:
Excellent; glad to see it worked out so well and the Squire's actually running better than ever. Don't you love it when that happens?
