I just saw a 1985 Caprice Estate for sale here. It is in very decent state, has all option, Californian car. The seller says it has a 350 with 700R4 combo. I started to doubt a bit, but after reading through the brochures of those years, it seems to me that only the 305 with 200R4 was available. Only a 350 Diesel was there.
There was of course the 9C1 Police package that did have the 350/700R4 combo, but I thought that was only for sedans.
Could a private person order this in a wagon as well, or if it is thrue, is it just a replacement engine and tranny?

    Thanks!

As far as I know it was just the 305, except the police models which you stated, if you can get the vin number, you should be able to pull the motor size as long as it is still the factory motor.....

At least you can now....I would think you could with those years, if anything I work for a chevy dealership and I can have them run a vin check for ya if ya want.

The RPO sticker might reveal some info, although I don't where it is on the wagons.
The 350 could have been and option.

Thanks guys, I have asked some questions to the seller about this, so let's just wait and see. I might have a look this week, then I will certainly take the VIN to check.

Lift up the rear floor where you would get to the 3rd row seat and it will be on the bottom of that. Should tell you everything about he car.

Unless its a 9C1 Police/Taxi issued car, 1979 was the last year for the Chevy Gas engine to be used in the Caprice. The 9C1 was offered that year with either a 4.3/262 or 5.7/350 and 700R4 tranny

For Civilian cars, only the 4.3/262 V6, 5.0/305 and the Olds 5.7/350 Diesel were offered. Either the TH200 junk 3 speed or the stronger 700R4 4 speed trannys were available.

A sure way to know whats there, unless its or the motor has been changed, is the sticker on the fan shroud.

I believe 1986 was the first year for the 307 to go in the Caprice wagons. It should be a 305 unless a 350 has been put in its place, which was common when the 305's died.

When did the 200-4R go in those??? If Blackie is talking about the 200-4R it's far from junk but the TH200 WAS junk. Could be that the 200-4R went behind the Olds 307 only. I had box wagons but they all had the 307 and the 200-4R. Until they had 455's.
I had an 82 Buick wagon and IT had the 307 / 200-4R in it. The earlier 307's were better engines than the later one's. Still doggie though....just not as bad.
