I just scored a 79 Ford Fairmount Squire Wagon. Been garaged for the last 15 years perfectly straight , interior is a 9/10 , and 31K original miles. Having a friend completely go through and tidy things up. Steering column was busted from an attempt at stealing the car prior to my possession. What other models does a 79 Ford Fairmount Squire Wagon Steering Column interchange with ? I have heard so far that the Zephyr , Futura , Possibly Capri ,and Mustang . Can anyone help me? This baby purrs like a kitten and I want to get it road worthy. Just need a new column would like to keep original. Thanks for your time in advance.

You heard right, almost. Capris and Mustangs have no shifter indicator hardware mounting holes on the column shifter Auto. You can also go back to 1978, and include the Mustang II. Fairmont, 1982 Cougar, 1982 & up Granada, Baby LTD, any model with a column shifter, OR switch to a floor shifter completely, then you can use Mustang and Capri as well. If its got Cruise Control, then you'll need some extra bits to replace the broken stuff.

Holly macinolli. Another Fairmont. Your best bet is a like model. I think the Mustang/Capri columns won't have a column shift nor the indicator bits like Norm said. The only problem with LTDs is the wiring harness could be different but certainly another faimont or zephyr and the Cougar Granadas are probably best.

What engine does the squire have? Just curious.

Start hitting the scrap yards, dude! I hear there are quite a few Fairmonts in the yards up there. Here, they rust till there's nothing left. Like they said above, the Fairmont/Zephyr, Cougar/T-bird and LTD will work.

The Fox team is almost completely here. Well guys, I just found a really rare mini-Fox. A factory made Jet Electrica, based on the early Ford Escort/Lynx bodies. The Austin, TX company made 3,000 of them. This guy just restored one and sold it, and he's doing another one.

Wow you guys are Great! I really appreciate the help and super quick responses. I have hit 9 scrap yards so far and called over 30 with no luck at all. However since the cash for clunkers came along they have disposed of alot of the pre 1980 cars is what I was told. I have had a lot more hits now that my search has gotten wider. Handy Andy that site ROCKS! Found 8 of them in the blue color that I need. Waiting for quotes to come in tomorrow. I will get you guys some better photos. I took those on my phone and it does not do this ride any justice. ill keep you all updated with my new adventure.:)

    What pics?

Mine was vandalized back in 2002, so I know what damage can be done. Broken wheel, ignition lock screwed, plastic covers shredded, but the steel parts were left intact. Even the shifter was fine.

I've got a spare set of covers that you could dye the right colour (actually 2 sets - I believe in the Noah Principal - 2 of everything), but I'm prepping the house for major renos and throwing non-essential stuff out.

I only have one signal/horn lever, unless you can fix a cruise control (Roxio aftermarket) unit. and an extra wiper lever, and a round horn button for the stock, non-futura wheel. Those are all pretty common parts across the entire 1979 Ford cars, except the plastic covers.
