I'm wanting to buy a 91-96 Roadmaster/Caprice, but I also like to haul stuff on the roof, like lumber or kayaks. How tough is that Roadmaster skylight? Also, I'd want to use Thule racks in addition or instead of the factory luggage racks. Will the skylight interfere or be vulnerable? I've seen a lot of these wagons with big rims. How bad are those for the rest of the car? Is there a good cargo cover for these wagons? I'd be interested in hard or soft cover, mostly just to keep my tools and stuff from prying eyes. I'm also considering buying a Volvo wagon(940-960) or a Saab 9000, or maybe even some other sporty wagon. My Saab 900 recently blew up.

That's an awesome thread, we should start one here. That's what a station wagon is all about! A couple of faves:
If you want 'bigger', there's nothing like a Roadmaster. If you liked the Saab 9000 though, and want something similar, the Saab 9-5 Aero is outstanding. I'd also consider a Volvo V70 - either a T-5 or a V70R version.
Volvo 960/V90 wagons are great cars. I have seen a ton come into the shop with high miles. Just so you know, when it comes to change the timing belt at its interval, DO IT! When I told my customers they are due, most gave me the ok. However, I had a few that said "nah, its a Volvo it will be fine". Few months or even a year went by, came back on a flat bed. Stick with Volvo genuine parts, if you go aftermarket, the ONLY place I would suggest is IPD in I think Portland. Volvos are very sensitive cars. They always seemed to get cranky not having OEM parts on them. As for the Roadmaster. I "should" be getting one Spring but I don't know yet. I have been doing my homework on them. And all I read is really great things about the "gentle giant". Seems to be one of the last of GM's finest cars. I have yet to read anything negitive on the vista glass, leaks, cracks, or anything else.
He must have Air shocks, because that's as close to Air travel as he'd ever get with that load.Either picture.
Get a Caprice, it doesn't have the Vista Glass so you don't have to worry about it and you'll have a bigger rack on the roof too! Clark
dont listen to him ....go for the luxury...get the buick. the dome only leaks if parked under a pine tree for years without moving!
