I finally found a Malibu! Its a 79 with the 305 V8. I have been trying to get ahold of this guy for almost a month, I talked to him today and will be bringing her home soon! There is 4 other cars that need to be moved before I can get her out and home. I practically stole her to, I asked what he wanted, and unbelievably he said $250! Now the hard part begins, getting that tiny small block out of there and trying to find a way to get all the power to stick to the ground.
Hows the frame rails from infront of th back tires to the bumper? No matter where these G-Body cars grew up, I have seen the rails cracked or rotted out on cars that have come from Arizona and Cali. What are your plans for motor? If you could get your hands on a 96-99 Vortec 305, they push 220+hp stock. I would even consider pulling out my L05 350 for one if I could find a deal. Then again, I would probably just pull the Vortec heads off the the 305 and bolt them on my 350 and get her up near 220 hp with just the head swap.
The rails are rusty, and cracked but that doesn't matter to me. Im just gonna chop them off any way. I will be narrowing the frame in the rear to make room for a much bigger tire and rear end. The small block will be coming out and going on craigslist, I have a BIG block that will soon reside under a 4" cowl induction hood! How about 1300HP?
It should be a full frame car. If so get a welder and box it in. Great buy. Get a 350 to a 454 will fit with no problems
Sounds mighty tasty! 1300hp, you have close to $20K in that thing huh? With that kind of power, I would have a complete tube frame built and caged. Motor plate and mounts will be a must, no way will anything but atleast 5 points of mounting will keep that beast on a leash.
I don't/won't have any where near that kind of cash in it, but I know all about the frame, cage, motor plate, etc. I would like to do a full tube chassis, but I don't think Im gonna go that far. Im just gonna fix the frame that's there, and strengthen it where I have to. I am planning a full cage that will tie into the frame in at least 12 points. The rear section of the frame will soon be 2"x4" rec tube, and I will be doing some serious gusseting to make sure the frame doesn't twist like a pretzel. My big block is not a Chevy, but its still GM. It will end up at 566ci and will most likely be blown on alcohol.
Rock, Good job on the find! You're right about the sleepy looking little grocery getter... and then . I have a 70 Electra that has the same 455 4bbl as the Buick GS models. They never suspect the innocent-looking convertible, heh heh heh.
Quick question for you guys. If you were building a 1500HP engine and stuffing it in a Malibu wagon, would you leave the body a little rusty, faded, and stock, or would you make it pretty? I can't decide what to do. I will have no choice but to use a cowl induction hood because of the tunnel ram, but that and the wheels would be the only indicator it's fast!
To tell you my opinion is to keep the HP to about 650 and hide it all under the hood. Satin black on the whole car. Sleeper.
I mean if you are at 1500 hp, I am pretty sure people will know it is fast.....kinda hard to hide that much power....
If I do paint the car if will definitely be black, hot rod black. Almost flat black. Im also gonna take all the chrome off it to. I will most likely have it sand blasted and powder coated the same black I use on the body. It will be hard to keep it at 650HP considering Im building a 566CI big block. It naturally makes 409HP stock. I will be boring, and stroking it. I was gonna use a blower but it would actually restrict the air flow Any one have a 1600CFM alcohol carb laying around?
After 6 weeks, Mally is finally home! She got here Saturday night and I got started right away. The starter is seized up so I'll have to take it apart and fix it but she should run. The interior is all trash, but that's ok, I have a plan for that! I crawled under and looked at the frame better then I could where she was buried. It's in pretty good shape except for the horns in the rear. If it wasn't 16* out side and starting to snow I would be out there with my drop light getting the starter off instead of sitting on the couch being lazy. I have one problem though, any one know how to get the plastic off the tail gate with out destroying it? My gate won't open, I think one of the rods fell off but I cant get to it with the panel on?
Got my Christmas presents today! Headers, and a 7qt aluminum oil pan. To bad my motor mounts aren't here, I would be out there right now pulling that tiny 305 out and getting her ready for the stock 500 I'll be starting with. By the way, any one near Colorado have a 500 caddy for sale? I need another one! 70-71 Eldorado would be sweet.
