I do have a test light and meter. I'll have to trace everything to sort it out. I was hoping someone had pics of a similar vehicle to get me pointed in the right direction and help identify parts. I replaced the starter relay and cleaned the ground for it, new battery and cables so I can go from there.

Still unsure what the black wire with the spade connector is.

I need to find the manual that photo came from so I can get the color code for the wires. Luckily, the care is quite original so not much has been hacked up and should be straight forward to trouble shoot.

The black w/white stripe wire *may* connect to that tab on the relay, but the relay doesn't feed power to the tab. Test the wire for power, it may be the feed from the solenoid to that tab.

Anyhoo, if you can post pics of your wagon (Meteors and Beaumonts are really liked on here since they're Canada-only), we all will likely fawn over it, and good luck with your diagnosis. If you have any Q's, don't hesitate to PM me in the 'Conversations' function.

Really appreciate the help. I'll add some more photos to my garage page.

I also started a page for the repairs as I go.

Well, I was finally able to get the fuel tank out. Turns out there is an access panel in the left rear wheel well, just remove the left rear tire and its right there. Unplug the wiring, cut the hose, 1 bolt on the strap and out it comes (putting all new rubber lines in that are ethanol proof). There is also a factory drain plug in the bottom of the tank (I found 4 gallons of varnish with flakes). Now I need to locate a sending unit which is apparently made of unobtanium. Progress none the less.

Anyone with a link to a sending unit gets free beer for life in my shop.

Also picked up a shop manual, worth every penny. That's how I found the access panel.

You will have a hard time finding a new fuel sending unit. I'm not sure what years interchange on Fords, but old time user Fat Tedy was able to find a NOS replacement from Greene Auto Sales for his 1972(?) Mercury Meteor wagon. I don't remember when that was and he hasn't been on here in years, but if you can get a part number that is a start.

Indeed, it is proving to be the first part that I am unable to locate anywhere. I have seen a few NOS Torino sending units that are similar but not the same and they are going for ridiculous prices. I have started the hunt for a unit which is as close as possible and will likely rework it to fit. It is definately an odd shape pickup tube and float rod but the sender itself, the float, the sock, the ring and the seal all appear to be universal with the other Ford products. Gonna have to get creative with the silver solder I suppose.

Part number is C6AF-9275-D. If anyone has one kicking around I have a crisp Benjamin or two for ya. Otherwise, I will post my progress on my build thread for anyone interested.

Yeah, hit up Green Sales, their deal is they've bought and cataloged parts inventories that Ford dealers have gotten rid of; it's a crapshoot, TBH, but it never hurts to check, and they have peeps that can help you ID parts and tell you if they have something.

And, google "obsolete Mercury/Meteor parts" for anyone else.
