New member here. Looking to replace the faded woodgrain on my 68 Colony Park. Does anyone supply original type material? Where can I find it?

You may get something out of the cosmetic and restoration thread. Oh by the way welcome to the forums! Share some pictures of your longroof (we love pictures around here!)

Hey there, you have at least a couple of options, not cheap, but decently long lasting vinyl:

    woodgrain4wagons.com
    stripeman.com

You won’t get an exact match because the original vinyl used was produced using a high quality rotogravure process that layered different ink tones onto a colored base of vinyl, had an excellent realistic look and crisp detail, but required massive runs to make it cost effective to produce. Auto woodgrain just is not made this way anymore, sadly. (Also the application process involved wetting the car panel and back of the vinyl with a soapy water solution and heating up areas of the vinyl to get it to properly confirm to body contours. The wet application allowed for some repositioning of the vinyl on the panel if needed during application.)

The current replacement woodgrain vinyl uses digital printing over a white base vinyl and is applied dry, not wet, so if you mess up you are wasting an expensive section of product. However, like the old style woodgrain, it can be heated to make application easier on tricky body contours.

The JC Whitney stuff looks ok and is much less expensive, but fails pretty quickly so I wouldn’t recommend it.

BTW, I love those 68 Mercuries and as others say, please post some good photos.

    Best,
    Owen

Welcome. And as everyone says we love pictures. My recommendation would be stripeman as well. He has a lot of variety. I had kinda forgotten, is that wood planked. Thinking it is.
