Hello, my name is Rick and new to the forum. I have started the restoration on my '55 Safari and have some questions. My Safari needs floors in the passenger and cargo compartments. Can I use the floors from a 1955-1956 Pontiac 2 door coupe and/or a 2 door wagon? I am also told the floor and braces (sold as one piece) from a 1955 Nomad can be used BUT with a lot of money and labor. Is that true? Any help, answers and advise is greatly appreciated.
From what I know, which ain't much...... For doors, you need to use 2-door Safari doors, or (possibly) Nomad doors. The doors on a 'regular' Pontiac 2-door wagon from that period have different frames around the door glass. As to floor pans, the full Chevy Nomad floor pan can't be used without modification because the '55 - '57 Safari has about a 5" longer wheelbase than the '55 - '57 Nomad. I don't know for certain where the difference would be, but I THINK (not sure) that at least part of it is just ahead of the rear wheels, giving rear seat passengers in the Safari more leg room. One other thing to note: the 1955 Pontiacs were built on two different wheelbases. The Star Chief models, including the Star Chief Safari, were built on a 124" wheelbase. All the other models, including the 'regular' station wagons (I think) were built on a 122" wheelbase. 1955 Pontiac wagon brochure: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/pontiac/55ptw/55ptw.html 1955 Pontiac brochure: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/pontiac/pto55/pto55.html AND.....
