I am in the process, finally, of getting collector car insurance on my two old trucks. I am probably going with Haggerty, I was quoted a very low rate, for full coverage with an agreed rated acceptable to me. I have been using State Farm for several years, liability only, and it has been almost as much to cover the old cars as our 2008 and 2009 full coverage vehicles. I figure I will save $800+ each year, total. I am in North Carolina, a couple collector places won't insure vehicles in this state. Anyone using someone else? I probably should apply with Grundy, but they seem a bit harder to do an application with.
Be sure to ask about any policy restrictions on usage and mileage for the cars. Some specialty policies only allow you a few miles.......hence much cheaper rates.
I have Hagarty on my wagon, and my dad has them on his 76 t/a... They are a very nice company if you ever have to deal with them. (Hopefully not) Also, my dad has Grundy on his 60 plymouth and they also are a very nice company to deal with. The only reason the t/a doesn't have them is because at least at the time they weren't accepting modified cars.
Well, Haggarty back tracked on me. I said on the phone one vehicle is parked outside, but in a locked enclosure and that there is security and cameras. The guy on the phone said that should be fine, but I got a call later saying it wasn't. I will try calling a few more places tomorrow I guess.
I think my state farm agent is putting the screws to me. My homeowners is through Allstate. Every so often SF tries to get me to switch it to them, but even with a multi-policy discount I'd still loose several hundred. I hate to switch because I've had them for close to 30 years, but our driving record is clean and the rates we pay seem high. My trucks are on a regular policy, liability only. I asked about collector insurance a couple times, and they were going to make me jump through hoops. I'll figure something out.
Collector car insurance? My agent with Nationwide can not touch the speciality companies, but he told me to always say that the cars are stored inside a secure building. I applied may times, but always told the truth till my friends told me that they had to lie to get coverage.
Or you could put it in a building... Heaven forbid the car is NOT in the building and something happens say in the driveway where the car ACTUALLY kept, you are SCREWED! Policy terminated... no $ from them...
Marcar, easier said than done sometimes. I do have it in what I think is the next best place, a locked yard with cameras and security guards. The place it is at now is where I am trying to finish up an engine swap and do some bodywork at the same time. It is at a community college, by the way. I am taking some auto restoration courses there. I was trying to be honest with all the ins. co's, and say I can't meet the locked garage requirement for the one vehicle, can we work something out. I guess this one will have to wait until I can get something worked out for enclosed storage. Or until I get it in running condition again so I can park it in the garage. Someday I will have that place in the country with a large garage for all my old stuff and space for a lift, paint booth, etc. At least I hope I will.
No, I don't have the room for a carport. I need to start saving up for the next place and hopefully it will come to pass. Or get down to just one old vehicle.
